In 2019, I led a £9m Seed Round. It was the largest Seed Round in the UK that year. Now... You would expect the usual reasons why we invested so much: 1. A clear story 2. Special founders 3. A large opportunity But there was also something else that was a big reason for why we invested. What was it? The founders were able to hire in some of the best people we had seen. They had already built exactly what this company needed to. They had extreme amounts of success doing it. And now were willing to risk everything to join this tiny little start-up. Funnily enough one of those exceptional hires ended up being the CEO! That’s how good their hiring was. At the end of the day, investors invest into teams. And those teams are the people who are going to be the difference between a successful company or not. So as a founder you have to show investors that you can, will and have hired the best of the best. Because second-rate hires will never cut it. -- P.S. Couldn't get to eCom Collab Club™ 🥞 London today? Or you were there but it's all a bit of a blur? Well worry not, the latest episode of Recap from Cogent2 is here to break down the knowledge and share the wealth. The centrepiece of May's session was a panel on Data Driven Decision Making, chaired by Nathan Lomax. Taking part were: Angelica Olszewska from NAYDAYA Andre Brown from Advanced Commerce Valeria Granda from rebuy Hannah Herlihy Lowe from Conjura Iain Coplans from Stok.ly You'll have to watch for the full nine yards, but the WHY (thanks to Hannah's offspring) featured heavily throughout and there were some really interesting and actionable insights from everyone on the panel. That theme of Why fed through into Val's session with Adam Pearce on the Airfryer, which was engaging and thought-provoking as per. And just to prove that dreams do come true, stoked to have bagged a £100 Amazon voucher for my post-event selfie (if a piece to camera counts for that). Already considering far too many data points and in danger of being paralysed into purchasing nothing... I consider myself lucky—I've worn the shoes of founders and donned the VC hat as well. Attending pitching events was part of my weekly routine in both cases. However, I've never experienced anything quite like what the Pitchflix team and Shane Smith delivered at Level39. rev London was a truly disruptive event for the #venturecapital industry. Instead of the traditional format where founders pitch to investors, this time accelerators and VCs took the stage to explain to founders why they should choose them. It was a true "think outside the box" approach, and I deeply admire it. This is precisely what the ecosystem needs to catch up with Silicon Valley. Beyond the fantastic #networking opportunities, the session fostered real and frank conversations between parties that are typically represented in opposite roles. One thing everyone seemed to agree on: "investors invest in people." That's why ETA Technologies' presence was invaluable.
