Last week, Investment20/20 hosted our final workplace visit of the academic year at The Investment Association. We were thrilled to welcome Year 12 students from both Holland Park School and Whitmore High School to our offices. The students received an insightful overview of Record Financial Group and an introduction to investment management from Victoria Butcher. They also had the chance to network with our current trainees and apprentices, including Maisha Rashid from The Investment Association, Maisie Lewis and Layla Osbourn from Northern Trust Asset Management, Enida Januzi from Schroders, Dion Zeka and Viola Marengo from Invesco Ltd., who shared their career journeys and top tips. To finish the session, Harry O'Connor, CFA from Brooks Macdonald led an engaging interactive activity on Sustainability. A huge thank you to all our volunteers for sharing your insights and taking the time to speak with the students. And a special thanks to Dilan Wanniarachchi and Andrew Newton at Whitmore High School and Robert Mc Carthy at Holland Park School for bringing along your students. Northern Trust Asset Management recently hosted an Investment20/20 insight visit for year 10 students from Haggerston School in Hackney. Over 40 students joined us for a morning of networking, insights and activities to help them understand why investment management is important to everyone’s lives and the broad career pathways in the sector. Supported by volunteers across Northern Trust Asset Management, students asked thoughtful questions in the networking session, exploring the skills and characteristics that are needed to succeed in the workplace. A tour of the building, including the Trading Floor, gave them a sense of what an office looks and feels like to work in, and taking part in the ‘Break the Bank’ activity let them understand the role of technology in everybody’s day to day life in accessing financial services. Hearing from Maisie Lewis, Justin Rigby and Owen Scammell, Investment20/20 trainees on the apprenticeship programme at Northern Trust Asset Management, gave students a brilliant insight to a day in the life of an apprentice and gained tips on how to navigate career decision making as they progress through school. "I really enjoyed the visit to Northern Trust Asset Management. We met lots of people who worked there and talked to them about their jobs and the skills they use at work. We also went on a tour and was able to go onto the trading floor. We spoke to a trader and learnt how they manage investment opportunities. I learnt about the skills I will need to work in investment management. I found out that it’s important to be eager to learn, but it’s okay to make mistakes as it is part of how you learn. I also learnt that communication skills are important and to be confident in your communication. I found Northern Trust Asset Management to be a friendly environment and would like to work here in the future." — Year 10 student, Haggerston School A huge shout out to Bernard Robinson and Kaitlyn Klapperich who were instrumental in making this happen, and to all the brilliant volunteers who gave their time to support the event. We are very grateful! Bernard Robinson, Kaitlyn Klapperich, Alexis Goldfarb, Kelly Foulger
