Nick Manning has an excellent piece (https://lnkd.in/ebjX_YUF) in The Media Leader today on how agencies make money on what I always knew as broking and which today has been relabelled 'Principal-Based Media', presumably in the hope that that makes it alright...! There's a danger that Nick's points will be dismissed by many as the mechanics of media buying, the dark arts perfected by the few in order to squeeze a better deal for their clients by the agencies. As Nick shows it's nothing of the kind. And it's far more concerning than that. If you accept that the agency can act as a broker, or reseller of media space and time then you have to accept that the media agencies doing this are no longer objective in their recommendations; that their plans are not worth the paper they're written on; and that measuring the advertising's effect by channel is no longer possible. Trading media becomes just like trading a commodity. If you think that 'media' is more than a commodity defined by largely meaningless numbers on a spreadsheet, that instead 'media' is an integral component of advertising; and that creativity and craft matter, then you can join Nick and me (and an increasingly large group of supporters from all corners of the ad business) in the 'Advertising: Who Cares?' movement, and maybe join us at our event in September. Media Marketing Compliance helped the Association of National Advertisers study the market for 'Principal' (or 'Proprietary') Media, and the results have landed. The report is incredibly thorough and provides great guidance for advertisers. While not a new phenomenon, PM is increasing dramatically and becoming a much more controversial way for Media Agencies to make extra profit at the expense of transparency into their true revenues. Advertisers should take a firm view on whether this is in their best interests.

An insightful read as always from Will Page in Music Business Worldwide (MBW) on the tricky festival landscape. ‘Consumers in the UK spent just over GBP £2bn on live music and £2bn on recorded music, taking the total spend in 2022 to £4.1bn. That was up by almost a billion on pre-lockdown 2019. Impressed? Now add another £700m in spend across 2023 – 10% growth in recorded and a reported 24% in live – and we’re soaring towards £5bn (£4.9bn, see below). Not only that, music’s share of consumers’ ‘recreational’ wallet in 2023 rose to 3.3%. In other words, music’s getting a bigger share of a fatter wallet.’ https://lnkd.in/ewGGvQ2B

Big thank you to the GroupM team and Rebecca Lister for inviting me to today's discussion on responsible media at Media 360 event (Campaign UK). Some insights from the conversations that I had: - As an industry, we've already taken the first step toward becoming a catalyst for change rather than part of the problem. - We recognise the need to accurately measure the energy consumption of the digital advertising industry and commit to reducing it. - Additionally, we must examine the role of digital advertising, media, and marketing in a net-zero society. Only by doing so can we truly be catalysts for change and not contributors to the problem. - Responsible Journalism: Instilling confidence in buying responsible news should be on top of our agenda. Let's make it easy for advertisers to buy media against content quality criteria and credible news sources to support quality journalism across the open internet. - The Value-Action Gap: Addressing the disparity between what people say and what they do. Brands are tackling this gap by creating and promoting more sustainable products and services, but the digital advertising industry also has a crucial role to play. - Redefining Success: Our challenge is to redefine what success looks like for publishers and advertisers in this new context. I'm looking forward to continuing these important conversations and driving meaningful change in our industry.

IAB: Podcast, CTV and social video ‘outperform’ digital ad market. Digital adspend in the UK grew 11% to £29.6bn last year, ahead of GDP growth of 0.1%, according to the latest IAB and PwC Digital Adspend report. Podcast advertising, connected TV (CTV) devices and social video recorded the highest increases in spend, with year-on-year growth of 23%, 21% and 20% respectively. These three “outperformed” the rest of the digital ad market. One factor behind this was they were “more immune” to the upcoming cookie changes compared with other forms of advertising. Podcasting, in particular, was catching up with spend on streaming audio, with annual spend of £83m versus £92m. We're in the countdown phase to ProcureCon Europe Series in London on June 4th and 5th. Media Procurement is now a vital discipline within advertisers, especially with channels such as Retail Media, Digital Commerce and Connected TV exploding. These present new opportunities and risks that Procurement can help manage. All three revolve around the use of consumer data to improve effectiveness and its measurement. So new ways to manage data are required alongside the financial considerations that preoccupy Procurement. Media Procurement needs to help achieve positive outcomes not just 'savings' or 'value'. Advertisers are buying the media, not just the infrastructure around it. So more focus on what good media looks like is needed. These matters were explored in depth at last month's Marketing Procurement iQ conference in London. In two articles I outline the big themes discussed at the conference and the solutions. Last week we hosted an incredible session in partnership with Impact Culture. We invited our training partners and explored how we as L&D facilitators need to constantly adapt to emerging changes in the world and how we can create a safe space for our people at Publicis Groupe UK.   It’s no surprise that we each individually have a responsibility to educate ourselves (professionally and personally) but collectively we are stronger when we partner together with true experts in our network to support one another on this journey.   My key learnings to any training facilitator out there:   - Adapt your content to who you are speaking to - Acknowledge the different lived experiences and identity in your session - Consider what falls within your remit as a facilitator and what doesn't (we're not experts in everything!) - Use images that reflect the world around us - Breaks are a must! - Consider case studies that reflect real life experiences and perspectives as examples - Make reasonable adjustments and create equitable opportunities for all - Be aware of your intent versus the impact you will have - Make sure everyone's voice is heard and valued.   Thank you, Chaka Bachmann and Sanisha Wynter, for such a reflective session! Update from the PwC IAB UK 2023 Digital Adspend report….. UK podcast ad spend grew faster than any other digital format in 2023! Total UK podcast ad spend was £83m, up 23% yoy (£69m in 2022) 🚀 (Total digital ad spend grew 11% to £29.6bn) This is a phenomenal performance for podcasting and shows how strong the medium is and how it can genuinely perform for brands.
