Last week at Substrakt we launched our first Cultural Website Performance Benchmark Report (which you can download via the link in the comments). We looked at the 2023 website traffic data for 76 cultural websites (encompassing over 110 million user sessions). I am doing a couple of webinars over the next two Wednesdays (tomorrow - Weds 8th May at 2pm BST, and next week - Weds 15th May at 11.30am ET / 8.30am PT) to walk through the background to the report, and some of our main findings. Book your place here: https://lnkd.in/eeaHnrun For example, our analysis found that: - On average, mobile devices are now responsible for more than 69% of traffic to cultural websites. However mobile conversion rates are on average 68% lower than desktop traffic. - Cultural homepages are the entry point for just 16% of traffic to cultural websites. - Traffic from email converts at a higher rate than any other source. - Basket abandonment rates on cultural websites are 52% better than other ecommerce sites. - The average value of mobile donations increased by over 70% in 2023. - 'Engagement rates' for cultural websites are 40% lower than other sectors.

What an incredible experience yesterday at Entreconf in Bristol, surrounded by amazing entrepreneurs and visionary speakers. I had the privilege of hosting a panel on the Potential of Generative AI with the awesome Joyann Boyce, the brilliant Kate Dimbleby, and the super bright Judith Coghlan. It was an amazing Southwest initiative, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. Key takeaways from our discussion included: 🔹 Treat Generative AI like a puppy: It requires quality training, nurturing, and responsible care. Just like a puppy, AI needs our thoughtful attention and guidance to grow effectively. 🔹 Transparency is key: Be open about using generative AI and ensure that we do not take ownership of work that is not our own. Properly credit and reference all materials involved in creating our products. 🔹 Encourage honesty with teams: Create a culture of openness rather than shame or blame when discussing the use of generative AI in the workplace. Encourage teams to explore how these tools can enhance their work while considering the ethical implications. Following on from my post yesterday about product tagging (see comments), there's another reason why getting your taxonomy right is so important for #Shopify digital marketing - and it's a really important one.... We're still in the early days of the rollout of AI search results, but it is clear that Google wants to create a marketplace experience within its results pages. The image below is a great example. But just how do we take advantage of this? AI needs to be fed quality data to produce a decent output. By creating a consistent taxonomy that is used across channels - including SEO, PPC and even email - we can make sure we giving Google all the right signals to fuel its AI results. This is a core part of our strategy of Blink. This isn't just about SEO, although the taxonomy and architecture we build out using Macaroni Software is an important part of it. At the same time, our PPC team (led by the brilliant Jessica Morgan) make sure that attribute data is consistent with data sources such as Merchant Centre feeds, while email review flows (thanks to Louise Rebecca Thomas) segmented by category and sub-category to encourage attribute focused keywords in UGC. This is all combined with consistent schema (a nod to Elodie P. here) to create an ecosystem so that anywhere a search engine looks there are clear signals showing exactly what a product or category page is about. We're just about to hit August, which means that now is an ideal time to get all this in place for Q4. If you'd like to find out more drop me a message!

I read a really interesting article that was discussing which was more important. A stand out design for your website or investing in SEO. The comments on the article were all really good but the simplicity of one of the comments just stood out so I thought I needed to share it here. He said "Imagine you have a stunning palace and your palace is hidden in a dense forest. If there is no road to the palace no-one gets to see it's beauty! SEO is the road that leads to the palace." Is your palace your beautiful website or it is your product that isn't getting any visibility? Either way, are you doing enough to drive traffic to your website.

We're playing about with the formats for #brightonSEO in the UK this October and wanted to get some feedback on topics and the ideas in general. *Roundtables* - we've run these for a few years focussed around sector and job title, like agency owner, in-house ecommerce, agency head of SEO etc, there's usually about 12 people informal discussions. - Any ideas for topics for these you'd like to attend? - Do you like roundtables as a format? - What makes for a good roundtable? *Masterclasses* - a new thing, thinking about a 60-90 minutes slot, about 20-30 attendees, more in-depth and interactive than our usual conference talks. Aimed at more experienced attendees, more discussion, maybe more "laptop open and try thing thing" Might be topics like agency growth masterclass, paid media for ecommerce masterclass, Google tag manager debugging masterclass etc Would this be a format you'd be interested in attending? Great performance is VITAL to a successful website. Here are the results from a white-label website we are launching for our partner agency this week 👇 Here's what we did to improve the performance: > Minify and optimise CSS delivery > Minify, defer and delay JavaScript execution > Enabled Lazy Loading for images > Added missing image dimensions > Full preloading activated > Enabled dynamic caching and Memcached > Full cleanup of the database > Compressed images and set up WebP delivery Not sure what each metric in the image means? I've broken it down for you: Largest Contentful Paint Measures how long it takes for the largest visible element (like an image or a block of text) to load and appear on the screen. A faster LCP means users can see and interact with the main content more quickly. Total Blocking Time Measures the amount of time a webpage is blocked from responding to user input, such as clicks or keyboard actions. A lower TBT indicates a more responsive and user-friendly webpage. Cumulative Layout Shift Measures how much a webpage's layout shifts unexpectedly while it is loading. A lower CLS score means the page is more stable, providing a better user experience as elements don't jump around unexpectedly. One of the key facets of search in AI Overviews and regular SERPs: more personalisation. I'm seeing more and more of these 'You visit often' labels on Google Search Results in the UK. - Purpose: Highlights websites frequently visited by users. - Benefit: Makes it easier for users to find their preferred sites quickly. - Rollout: Began in December 2023 in the US, but now in the UK? - Goal: Enhances personalised search experience by prioritising frequently visited sites in search snippets.

I went from £5 p/h to founding a group of agencies doing £5m this year. A lot of new people following me so reintroducing myself: - I’m 26 - Get to choose where I work/ live/travel - Founded one of the UK’s leading ecom agency groups This is my story ⬇️ Age 14-21: → Lots of sh*tty minimum wage jobs. → 2 years on £5 p/h as a cook. → Then a labourer making £50 per day 🙃. → Had no clear focus and felt lost. → So I went travelling and spent all my ££. → Failed 5 businesses while at uni. → Became a miserable corporate slave. → Well into my overdraft and dead broke. Age 21-23: → Met my co-founder. → Needed a $1000 PayPal loan to start our agency. → Did cold outreach for months to sign our first clients. → Worked for almost nothing, trusted the process. Age 23-27: → Slowly built our reputation as ecom experts and marketers. → Built a team that took 2x agencies to 7 figures and 1x to 6 figures. → Building a holding company to do everything ecom for DTC brands. → Travelling the world, enjoying freedom, and having fun doing what I do. I’m not necessarily the most “talented” or “smartest” in the room. I just don’t give up - even when I have every reason to. That’s what got me where I am today. 📷 - my co-founder and I
