HM Revenue & Customs has made provision for an £81m spend on Microsoft #Azure services with IT reseller Softcat plc - a contract with an initial three-year term and an option to extend for a further 12 months under Crown Commercial Service’s Technology Products and Associated Services 2 framework. UK public sector could save hundreds of millions of pounds through less restrictive supplier rules on #cloud software #licensing, according to a new report from cross-party #thinktank the Social Market Foundation - 'Clearing the air' says the sector is overspending by about £60m a year due to what it describes as #unfair licensing practices. It estimates the sector could save at least £300m over the next five years. I often tell clients they should have an IT asset register even in SME's. An asset register, properly maintained, will record all your IT assets and their owner. I was having a conversation yesterday where a company's domain was approaching renewal. They had no idea who had registered the domain years ago and now cannot access the account to pay the reregistration. An asset register would have solved this problem because when the person who registered the domain left the company a new owner of the domain would have been appointed, recorded in the asset register and the account with the registrar also transferred to the new owner. Yesterday one of our SYNaaS managed clients restored emails that were accidentally deleted! This is what happened: 1) I got a notification that over 50 emails had been restored by the IT administrator 2) I messaged on the Teams channel asking if everything is alright? (We have a MS teams channel or slack channel for each managed SYNaaS client) 3) I messaged on LinkedIn and then got this reply where accidental deletion of emails was done due to a keyboard fault. This is a school we are working with - We have special rates in the education sector which saves a lot of cash for MATs. #Synology #education #edtech #backup #microsoft365

NHS cybersecurity colleagues please answer this question: - What do you do when major IT suppliers refuse to make DSPT submissions? *Despite their competitors making submissions demonstrating it applies to all* There are suppliers looking to interpret DSPT in such a convoluted way simply to not do it. *Despite probably having much of the evidence from ISO27001 etc.* I see this as a profound risk to patient safety and that’s before we consider suppliers refusing auditing existing DSPT submissions. Are roles being open for 6 months+ putting candidates off applying to your company? 🤔 I spoke to candidate I am working with last week who was approached by a company for a Cyber Security Manager role - one he would be a really good fit for. He was put off the role as he was told it had been open for almost 8 months and in his own words - "I know I'm good at what I do, but there are definitely other people out there with similar skills and experience for this role". He decided to pass on the role as it had been open so long and wasn't sure they were serious about hiring or knew exactly what they wanted from a candidate. He is at late stages for a couple of roles we are working on so it may have been a different case if he had just started looking at new roles - but this is a common occurance in the market. Companies with job postings open for 6 months+ who aren't willing to change strategy or work with specialist agencies like Cyber Spring will miss out on the best candidates. Over the last 5 years, I have helped companies reduce their average time to hire great security talent to 27 days. If you want to make sure your brand is viewed positively in the industry and don't want to miss out on the best candidates - it may be time to rethink your hiring strategy. #cybersecurity #securityhiring #recruitmentprocess

It must have been a way to make cross-country more bearable, but we'd never get away with that kind of littering these days. Or would we? It's not safe to throw old bank statements in the bin, and it's not safe to simply take old computers and hard drives to the tip.
