What a week we've had! It was a pleasure to welcome two honoured guests to our London office. Firstly, we welcomed a delegation including representatives from the Korea Productivity Center and the 중소벤처기업진흥공단(Korea SMEs Startups Agency) (KOSME), a government organisation dedicated to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups in South Korea. KOSME organised a visit to the UK for teachers from Korea's specialised high schools. This initiative aims to provide teachers with advanced vocational education and insights into the field of entrepreneurship by experiencing the UK's educational and business environments. We also had the pleasure of welcoming back Ms Lakshmi Venkataraman Venkatesan from the Bharatiya Yuva Shakti Trust (BYST), the renowned not-for-profit organisation that assists disadvantaged Indian youth in developing business ideas into viable enterprises under the guidance of a mentor, with the main objective of turning job seekers into job creators. This visit included a meeting and a podcast recording featuring our Head of Commercial & International Sales, Alan Howard. 🎙️ The podcast explored the value of the Entrepreneur Mentor Training Scheme in India, which City & Guilds has accredited since 2007, and discussed how we can grow our collaboration to support more impactful initiatives. 🤝 Stay tuned for our upcoming episode! 📺 We look forward to seeing both parties again. #CityAndGuilds #InternationalCollaboration #Podcast #FindTiai

I was delighted to attend Learning and Work Institute’s Employment and Skills Convention yesterday in Birmingham. We discussed investment in skills and access to employment in depth, as well as tackling the topic of inequality and how we can open up skills to all. I also spoke on panel 2, ‘Carrots, Sticks and Silver Bullets’, exploring employer investment in skills alongside some fellow skills advocates Naomi Clayton, Jane Gratton, Martin Chandler and Robert West. It was a fantastic discussion! #EmpSkills24 Sarah Turner Bryony Kingsland Olivia Johnston Krishna Parekh (Associate CIPD) Paddy Craven City & Guilds

As the world strives towards net zero goals, the importance of green skills has never been clearer. 🌍 From retrofitting buildings to installing electric vehicle charging stations, green skills are essential to meet industry demands for a sustainable future. Green skills are becoming relevant across all sectors, not just traditionally green industries. According to the PwC Green Jobs Barometer, green jobs are growing at four times the rate of the overall UK job market. As we collectively focus more on our environmental impact, these skills will soon be an entry-level requirement for almost any role. Join the conversation! 💬 What green skills are shaping your industry? How do we navigate the UK skills gap? 💭 That's what our CEO, Kirstie Donnelly, MBE, discussed with The D Group yesterday in a thought-provoking discussion encouraging lifelong learning and upskilling, and emphasising the importance of a future-proofed skilled workforce.✔️ #CityandGuilds #SkillsDevelopment #SkillsChangeLives
An insightful session with Kirstie Donnelly, MBE of City & Guilds on addressing the UK skills gap yesterday afternoon. The 'skills shelf life' is now at 3 years, down from 30 just a few generations ago. This has huge ramifications for the way skills are developed and maintained and our education system is still a long way from catching up! To successfully address this challenge, we need to take a radically different approach to skills, looking in the long term to develop a culture of life-long learning and constant cultivation of new skills. Part of this is working towards genuine parity between university and non-university based education.

New heroes for Net Zero 🌎 Creating and filling green jobs is crucial if the UK is to meet its target to deliver a net-zero economy by 2050. However, the available workers and skill set required for these positions are increasingly falling short of what is needed to meet growing demand, with the Green Alliance stating that “every major sector in the UK needs to close a significant skills gap to enable them to reach net zero.” Greenworkx, an EdTech start-up with a mission to get 10 million people into green jobs in 10 years, is focused on tackling this ‘green skills emergency’. ✅ The City & Guilds Foundation has worked in partnership with Greenworkx for a pilot that addresses the increasing demand for Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) and Retrofit Assessor roles key to making older buildings more energy-efficient and sustainable. 🎉 Huge congratulations to James Timpson OBE on his new appointment as Minister for Prisons, Parole and Probation. James is a Fellow for City & Guilds and was one of our Commissioners on our Future Skills Commission for Prisons, so we know first hand his passion for skills, training and genuine rehabilitation. This is great news for the sector and really gives an opportunity for those who have been through the Prison system the opportunity to move into good jobs through the acquisition of skills, and in doing so helps our UK productivity agenda and society more broadly 📈 🤝. #Congratulations #SkillsChangeLives.
