Scotland faces significant challenges in achieving its 20GW onshore wind target by 2030, according to a new study by BVG Associates. The report highlights three major bottlenecks: planning decisions need to double from 17 to 35 annually, Police Scotland's capacity for supporting turbine component deliveries must increase dramatically, and CfD auctions need to award an average of 2.5GW of onshore wind capacity each year. These resource constraints in planning, logistics, and procurement pose serious obstacles to Scotland's ambitious renewable energy goals. https://bvgassociates.com/

LCI Analytics
LCI Analytics MD Steve Robertson delivered a powerful call to action for the aviation sector to address CO2 emissions head-on at the Offshore Energies UK Aviation conference in Aberdeen. Despite the accolades for the UK North Sea hydrocarbon development, LCI Analytics highlighted the stark reality of the oil industry's image problem, with its significant contribution to global CO2 emissions. As an overall proportion of offshore oil and gas emissions, aviation accounts for a fraction of a percent of the total. Even so, it is still important for the aviation sector to take CO2 emissions seriously. ESG concerns, supply chain issues, and underinvestment were flagged as pressing challenges. Drawing insights from LCI Analytics’ models, it was revealed that prioritising ‘lowest carbon’ contracting could achieve an estimated ~20-30% reduction in CO2 emissions, under certain scenarios. A new fleet renewal cycle presents an opportune moment for the industry to rethink aircraft choices and embrace the new generation of efficient rotorcraft as replacements for legacy aircraft. I know that I am probably a little biased, but Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)'s #GlobalOffhoreWindReport is a truly amazing publication and exceptionally insightful, even if you've been in the industry for twenty years or twenty minutes. There is an entire section dedicated to what has happened over the past 12 months and how GWEC's Market Intelligence team is seeing offshore wind develop over the next decade, as well as country deep dives (even Australia gets a mention, as well as South Korea - the home of this year's APAC Wind Summit). However, the thing that I really enjoyed this year was the deep dive into offshore wind finance. I thought it was a great read and pretty good explanation of terms that we hear bandied around the industry like #BlendedFinance, #ConcessionalFinance etc. as well as providing some illustrative case studies. The supply chain section is also really relevant for people that have been following GWEC's work on the subject. I think it helps to put the supply chain challenge into a global perspective to really see where the risks and opportunities lie. So well done Feng Zhao and Rebecca Williams (and your amazing teams) for pulling off another brilliant publication. Thanks to Lincoln Electric, Iberdrola, Mingyang Smart Energy and all of the other industry sponsors that supported the report, from the peer reviews and case studies through to thought leadership and beyond. Whats happening to drive innovation forward in Floating Offshore Wind? I have posted about stakeholders looking to push forward action in FOW in recent weeks; ✅ Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult - supply chain review - inter-array cable systems ✅ The new FLOW Innovation Centre #flowic in Aberdeen ✅ EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre - white paper call for a National FLOW Test Facility Why all this activity? Well we have a target to hit - 5GW installed FOW in the UK by 2030, and thats part of the bigger target of 50GW of offshore-wind. There are some huge challenges to get the UK, Europe and the ROW match-fit for this, including but not limited to; ▶️ Supply chain ▶️ Port infrastructure ▶️ Standardised modular platforms ▶️ Installation, cable and mooring systems ▶️ O&M planning We've said before that collaboration is key to rapidly drive innovation. Norway has picked up the challenge, with a target of 30GW installed offshore wind by 2040, and is now taking steps to enable that. The Norwegian NOW project aims to bring some big-ticket industry players together to deliver 4 challenges to accelerate this process. With the likes of Vattenfall, Seagust, Equinor, Deep Wind Offshore and EDF and others, they will be pushing innovation forward on; ⏩ Optimising Efficiency - Annual Energy Production via design and O&M ⏩ Sustainability - reuse of sub-structures, new materials, design, recycling ⏩ Installation - drilling techniques in hard rock locations, new designs and materials ⏩ Environmental Impact - noise, biodiversity, microplastics Across a 4 year programme the European Commission will support with €6m. Great to see other countries really getting into the detailed innovation in FOW. Let's hope that the wider EU and UK can share some of these key learnings and developments. Similarly, let's hope the new Gov. gets behind UK FOW and answers the calls made by our ecosystem stakeholders to support our own innovation activities and infrastructure. Do you think the new Gov. has the appetite and strategic investment to get behind the FOW UK sector? Will they recognise the opportunity to regenerate and grow the economy through new net zero sector policy and industry growth. What else do we need in the UK? #floatingoffshorewind #renewableenergy #flowinnovation Image Credit; Principle Power, Kincardine floating wind farm

SEA-LNG
LNG’s role in supporting the shipping industry’s environmental, commercial and operational challenges was explored in a recent webinar hosted by Riviera Maritime Media Ltd, featuring remarks from SEA-LNG member Lloyd's Register. SEA-LNG board member and LR’s Global Gas Segment Director, Panayiotis Mitrou, noted the future potential of bio-LNG and renewable synthetic e-LNG, highlighting their growing traction within the industry and the possibility of integrating these fuels with technologies such as carbon capture. Panayiotis also mentioned the great strides the sector is taking towards tackling methane slip with new technologies and the initiatives in place; such as Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) and the EU-funded GREEN RAY Project, working to eliminate fugitive methane emissions. The growing LNG infrastructure was also discussed with Avenir LNG’s bunkering commercial director, Jan S., who provided a practical perspective on developing the global LNG network. Meanwhile, James Fisher and Sons plc Tankships’ voyage operations manager, Nicola Ellwood (FCMI CMgr), discussed the operational challenges and strategic initiatives undertaken to facilitate the use of LNG; covering its integration within Tankships’ environmental strategy. It is great to see commercial weight building behind LNG as a marine fuel, and there is no doubt that LNG represents the practical and realistic pathway to net-zero shipping emissions. THAMES VESSEL AND QUAY OPERATORS - HAVE YOU SHARED YOUR FUTURE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS WITH US YET? Electric Thames is an ambitious plan which could see a radical new relationship between Thames vessel and quay operators and London’s energy network. It is a collaboration between Marine Zero, LCP Delta, and UK Power Networks. Launched in April 2024, the project is exploring how a new generation of electric and clean fuel vessels could help to power London’s electricity network, generating income for vessel operators and reducing emissions in the capital. We are currently surveying Thames vessel and quay operators to identify and map out their future energy requirements. This will allow us to better plan and complete enabling works to facilitate the move to cleaner vessel and river operations in the vitally important River Thames. The information we collect from vessel and quay operators will also allow us to understand how quayside power units and a new generation of electric and clean fuel vessels could support London’s energy network, generating income for operators and reducing emissions in the capital. Our thanks to all operators who have already completed the survey.
