Great to capture some insight from Ben Lewis-Hayes from Bute Energy, as he is talking about renewable energy and the critical role it plays at the RICS Wales Conference. Great to see Cornwall Insight's Capacity Market Forecasts in the media this week. Growing a sustainable energy system, delivering lower cost energy, and securing supply, all while some of our current infrastructure is getting closer to retirement will pose significant challenges for the next elected party. Cornwall Insight's analysis predicts that the price paid to generators for supplying additional power during peak demand periods is likely to remain high until the end of the decade. With ageing power plants and the expensive construction of new electricity generation sources, alongside the uncertainty around nuclear plant extensions all cited as key reasons. Confidence to make the right investment and innovation decisions. Recently, ATI Head of Technology – Sustainability & Strategy, Adam Morton joined Energy Systems Catapult’s Net Zero report launch discussing how the UK can achieve a cost-effective Net Zero energy system. "It is essential we accelerate the innovation of more novel technologies to commercially scalable and replicable solutions in key areas, including aviation, if we are to get to Net Zero by 2050. Developing ultra-efficient, zero-carbon and cross-cutting technologies alongside the ramping up of renewable energy sources for the production of sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen will be crucial on the journey to Destination Zero." There was a palpable energy and sense of optimism at this week’s RenewableUK Cymru reception at the Senedd. Bringing together politicians, government and industry is critical to working out how we can tackle some of the core challenges currently facing the industry, in particular: grid, planning and ports.

Significant step forward for development of port infrastructure for offshore wind in Scotland today (and one that will doubtless be a talking point at today's All-Energy Exhibition and Conference): Leading ports from across Scotland have today launched the Scottish Offshore Wind Ports Alliance (SOWPA) - a progressive and collaborative forum of the country’s leading infrastructure facilities, targeted at optimising the opportunities from offshore wind. SOWPA is represented by leading offshore energy ports across Scotland, which hold expertise across the full offshore wind value chain, from manufacturing and fabrication through to marshalling, assembly, and operations & maintenance (O&M). The alliance says it is "developing opportunities to enhance regional competitiveness, drive efficiencies and fast-track the required expertise to support the UK’s burgeoning offshore wind industry". This will be achieved by optimising large-scale operations and addressing "common and complex" industry challenges through knowledge sharing and collaboration. The aim is to improve regional competitiveness and enhance the value proposition in support of ScotWind, INTOG and all future offshore wind leasing rounds in the UK. Iain Sinclair, Executive Director at Global Energy Group, said: “It is widely recognised that ports have a critical enabling role in the industrialisation and deployment of offshore wind in the UK. Today’s announcement demonstrates that ports are motivated to take the initiative, work proactively and diligently together, and align with the whole offshore wind ecosystem, to maximise the localisation of the supply chain requirements. “SOWPA’s collective capability, knowledge and expertise is a world leading value proposition. We have a willingness and appetite to enhance our competitiveness, address supply chain challenges and deliver against Scotland and the UK’s offshore wind ambitions.” SOWPA says it is working to support the delivery of recommendations in recent industry reports from Offshore Wind Industry Council, the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership, as well as the Industrial Growth Partnership (IGP), all pointing to the pivotal role that ports infrastructure has in the success of Scotland and the UK in delivering our offshore wind ambitions and industrial growth. "These plans highlight the need to develop our supply chain, including ports, as a system and support their critical role as enabling infrastructure. Our ports present early investment and industrial growth opportunities to service the burgeoning offshore sectors of Scotland, the UK and around the globe," SOWPA said. Claire Mack, CEO of Scottish Renewables, said: "We are delighted to support SOWPA [which brings] together our best expertise and capabilities in port operations here in Scotland. The global opportunity in offshore wind is huge. Alongside attracting investment to Scotland this alliance will give us the ability to share experiences and expertise."

A new report by RGU Energy Transition Institute (ETI) has revealed that the UK will fail to achieve a ‘just and fair’ transition by 2030 unless there is urgent alignment across the political spectrum to sustain UK offshore energy industry jobs, supply chain investments and the economic contribution of the workforce. 💬 Professor Paul de Leeuw: "Accelerating the re-purposing of the North Sea as a world-class, multi-energy basin will ensure the sector can power the country for decades to come. The prize for the UK to get this right is enormous. But to deliver this requires action and urgency, which means faster planning and consenting and access to the grid."
