*** 2024 GRANT FUNDING NOW OPEN *** Cornwall Women's Fund is now accepting applications for our 2024 grant funding! We aim to support community projects in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly supporting women’s mental health. For this round of funding projects with a focus on perinatal mental health will be given preferential consideration. In 2021, we worked with a team from Oxford University that undertook in-depth research into the needs of women and girls across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. They considered existing research where it was available and interviewed charity and community leaders, and women from across the county to get a true picture of what really mattered to them and which areas it was difficult to find funding for. One of the 4 key areas in their report “Understanding what matters to women and girls in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly” was women and girls mental health, identifying a particular lack of support for those accessing perinatal mental health services. Our Members have voted the area of Women and Girls Mental Health for our 2024 grant funding and we are now accepting applications. To engage parliamentary newsletter subscribers with Marion Fellows MP’s Backbench Business Committee debate, on Global intergenerational week, the Chamber Engagement Team distributed a survey asking respondents about their experiences and ideas on intergenerational interaction. There were over 400 responses to the questions posed. The engagement team collated and grouped responses under 3 headings: 🤝Benefits of intergenerational interaction 🛑Barriers to intergenerational learning 💡Ideas for encouraging intergenerational interaction 🤝Benefits of intergenerational interaction Comments included: Gemma (workplaces, volunteering): “It helps me see things from different points of view. With younger people, I feel I can give them advice from personal experience, and they can keep me up-to-date with the modern world. With older people, our values and political views may be different but there are always more similarities than differences.” Alex (conservation volunteer): “I like to hear points of view from older generations because it’s important to understand their experiences and perspectives if I want them to understand mine. It also means I’m capable of having a conversation with anyone because we all have things in common, regardless of age.” 🛑Barriers to intergenerational learning Comments included: Julie (Girlguiding leader): “I love hearing about their concerns of the world and sharing my knowledge in an informal setting. They also help me understand social media! I also love seeing them develop as people. I gave them my time to increase their skills in various ways.” Jennifer (primary school volunteer): “It’s two-way support. We learn from each other. I can offer life experience and knowledge. In return, I am kept up-to-date, especially with new technology.” 💡Ideas for encouraging intergenerational interaction Comments included: Marion (writing workshop volunteer): “I find interacting with young people very uplifting. Their energy, creativity, and different ways of seeing the world are inspiring and energising in themselves.” Sheila (church): “It is one of the building blocks of a healthy community. From the youngest to the oldest, we have a contribution to make across the generations. Thanks to new flexibilities in the government's Adult Skills Fund (ASF) for 2024-2025, non-regulated, tailored learning provision like AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group’s Bespoke offer now qualifies for Adult Skills funding. Previously restricted to regulated qualifications, the ASF now includes a ‘tailored learning’ category encompassing non-regulated courses and employer-specific programmes like AIM's Bespoke provision. This opens doors for organisations to upskill their workforce through funded customised training. "This is a significant change for organisations seeking innovative training solutions," said Fabienne Bailey, AIM's Business Growth and Transformation director. “Previously, adult skills funding was primarily restricted to regulated qualifications but this new ‘tailored learning’ category brings together community learning, non-regulated courses, and employer-facing provision (that is not qualification-based) under one umbrella eligible for funding, which is great news for organisations working with us to develop bespoke provision”. https://lnkd.in/e4TvgGkn #ChamberRMteam Jas Jandu Sian Timmins Gary Birch Lillian Elekan

With FY25 charity budgets set and the question of 'value for money' a live dialogue in funding related discussions about services for children and families, it's timely to recall findings of the 2022 Paying What It Takes report, which found: *indirect costs are not an accurate measure of the efficiency or effectiveness of a not-for-profit or charity *true overhead costs often far exceed the amount charities are funded for *caps on overheads lead to lower capability and effectiveness. And we all know what has happened with the rising costs of living over the past 2 years... Highly recommend this course. I learnt loads from Rick and Beverley when I chose to specialise in NGO management as part of my Masters. As well as really engaging, creative content they encouraged us to question existing structures and practice, inequity and norms. They foster connections with some incredible leaders and organisations doing critical work accross the planet including in some of the most difficult and challenging environments in ways that will really push your critical thinking. #Learning #NGO #LeadershipAndManagement

In collaboration with the District Councils' Network, it was great to interview Simon Fletcher, Chief Executive at Lichfield District Council who wants to see a disruptor mentality utilised in local government, to provide fresh new solutions to the problems the sector is facing. We explored the need for continual investment in culture as a starting point. The need to try a new approach when a solution previously utilised no longer works and then the need for the regional and national inter council collaboration to push projects and sector improvement plans forwards. #localgovernmentpodcast #truthaboutlocalgovernment #disrubtionisprogress

For the right person, an important role

Now more than ever we are seeing a higher number of senior fundraisers securing CEO positions, which is great news for the sector. Is this due to the ever-increasing challenge of fundraising in a tumultuous economic climate or is the profession of fundraising finally being given the respect it greatly deserves? My initial thoughts are both, they are mutually inclusive. Evidence suggests that the former has sped up the latter given the steady increase of fundraising representation on charity SLT's since the financial crash in 2008 and the ensuing austerity that has stuck around like an unwanted regular gift. Providing fundraisers a seat at the top table has enabled the profession to demonstrate the wide range of qualities that fundraisers possess and has enhanced its reputation alongside those more established professions or career paths such as finance. As charities have professionalised dramatically since 2008, because they have had to respond to ever increasing needs, so has fundraising. It has moved from a functional task to a strategic necessity that sits at the heart of organisational strategy. Recently I was at the hugely impressive Hospice UK's Fundraising Leaders Conference where I saw a brilliant talk entitled 'Fundraising to CEO - Reflections on leadership' by St Clare Hospice's CEO Sarah Thompson (who moved from a Director of Fundraising role). She outlined four key aspects/requirements of being a great CEO: Visionary Culture setter Storyteller Relationship builder I speak and meet with fundraisers who are demonstrating those four qualities day in, day out so it was so good to hear from someone who has made that transition from fundraising to CEO and to proudly advocate for it. It is wonderful to see that fundraising is ever increasingly being taken more seriously and that more boards are looking for fundraisers to move into CEO roles. As a result we at Peridot are planning an event in Autumn which will focus on that transition. We will hear from speakers who have done it, and we will provide advice to support you through that journey. If you are interested in joining, please let me know. Key points from IVAR's new publication ‘Batten down the hatches’; 💡 Fierce competition for funds, especially between larger organisations and smaller grassroots groups. 💡 Charities are struggling to keep up with shifting funder priorities, feeling pressured to demonstrate innovation at the expense of proven long-term work. 💡 Grant application processes have become increasingly onerous and opaque, with lengthy applications, reporting requirements, and delays in decision-making. 💡 Charities are calling for more long-term and unrestricted funding to reduce the burden of constant applications and enable the delivery of well-evidenced, effective services. 💡 There's a need for more flexible and human practices in grant-making, including reduced reporting requirements, increased transparency in decision-making, and more feedback on unsuccessful applications.

We’re delighted to see former Prime Minister #GordonBrown endorse an independent report on Social Outcomes Contracts from ATQ Consultants Ltd, launched this week by Better Society Capital: https://lnkd.in/evNCCEdR 📣 The report, "Outcomes for All - Redefining Public Service Delivery," shows how outcomes contracts have generated nearly £9 of public value for every £1 spent, saving taxpayers £507 million. This news comes just a few weeks after Brown called for more outcomes-based commissioning, suggesting the government should announce a £1 billion children’s social impact bond that would be focused on reducing poverty.
