WiA is a platform that strives to promote, advance and celebrate women’s ongoing contribution to architecture.
About us
Women in Architecture UK (WiA) is a volunteer-led organisation that offers a platform for debate, idea exchange and support for women in architecture, practice, education and the wider built environment. WiA strives to promote, advance and celebrate women’s ongoing contribution to architecture. We aim to raise the profile, represent the views and promote the progression of women in architecture and the built environment professions. WiA are driven by a desire to tackle the deep-rooted, well-documented gender disparities within the profession. We will address the structural, institutional and cultural issues facing women within the profession and within education. With the aim of stopping the talent drain of women from our profession and ensuring the voices of women in architecture are heard. We are pushing to disrupt the familiar narrative of architectural history, from which women are largely omitted and obscured, by supporting, inspiring and championing women in architecture and diversity in architecture as a whole. We believe this will have a positive impact on the built environment and secure a legacy of inspiration for future generations. WiA, through its initiatives, activities and events will: - research to inform, promote, debate and bring about change - lobby for a working culture that supports women in the professions - campaign to raise the profile of women in architecture and the built environment - develop national and international professional alliances - exhibit work that reflects, promotes and celebrates the roles of women - mentor women throughout their academic and professional carers - network to share experience, exchange ideas and develop links - promote the significant and diverse contribution of women to the professions

Ivana is a mentor and experienced architect. She has extensive experience of residential-led, mixed-use projects and strategic masterplanning – both in the UK and internationally. She has worked on a wide range of projects, including all scales and stages of work – from individual buildings and streets, to neighbourhoods, towns and cities. Ivana is passionate about creating places that support communities and better people’s lives – with users, insights, and collaboration at the heart of the design. Ivana has particular interest and expertise in housing as she considers it the most important place in people's lives and where design can make the most difference. The building, as well as the place surrounding it, play a huge part in the quality of life and well-being of the very people who go on to inhabit the space and call it their home. #WIAUK #WomenInArchitecture #Mentoring #WIAMentoringProgramme #Mentors @karenfugle @tania Ihlenfeld @Dr Ana Mcmillin

Reflecting on our "Women in Architecture: Forging New Paths" event last week, we are filled with gratitude for everyone who attended. Thank you to our panellists: Sabrina Klor, Michela Carla Falcone, Angharad Palmer, Jean Wang, Laura Cushnie, Niya Ann Sharon, and host Tania Ihlenfeld for sharing their personal career stories which were truly inspiring. Here’s an overview of what our panellists covered: Sabrina Klor: Sabrina shared her experiences navigating the architecture field as a woman, rising to COO in one practice and emphasising the importance of inclusive policies and achieving work-life balance amidst professional challenges. Jean Wang: Jean discussed her transition from landscape architecture to a broader architectural practice, highlighting the importance of embracing diverse perspectives and mentorship in her professional development. Michela Falcone: Michela focused on discussing the unpredictability of career paths in architecture. She shared her own journey of unexpected shifts from working in Italy to Thailand, then Paris, and eventually starting her own practice and focused on teaching complex geometry. Laura Cushnie: Laura described her experiences with mentorship, detailing how guidance has clarified her career direction and enabled her to shift across vastly different sectors and explore new aspects of architecture, contributing to her growth as a leader. Angharad Palmer: Angharad reflected on her journey from architecture to client-side development, highlighting her passion for sustainable design and urban regeneration, and how embracing challenges has shaped her career and ‘anti-career’ outlook. Niya Sharon: Niya shared the challenges of establishing her own practice in India and receiving recognition for capabilities here in the UK. She expressed a candid, ‘how hard can it be’ mentality throughout her career and there is plenty more to come. Together, we celebrated diverse voices and built connections that will lead to future collaborations. Couldn’t make it? Catch up with the event recording on our website. Heartfelt thanks to our sponsors Solus, Bespoke Careers, and You See Media for their support. #WomenInArchitecture #ForgingNewPaths #Mentorship #ArchitecturalLeadership #Inclusion #Diversity #ArchitectureCommunity #ProfessionalGrowth Tania Ihlenfeld, Karen Fugle, Dr Ana McMillin, Yamon Phu Kyaw
