About us

War Child was founded in 1993 in response to the war in the Balkans. Our belief remains the same today as it was then—no child should have their life destroyed by war. Children do not start wars but their families, homes, and schools—the very things they rely on for support and safety—continue to be destroyed by conflict. Children are not only at risk of being killed or injured but as communities flee and disperse, children often find themselves alone, traumatised, unable to continue their education and with no one to turn to. At War Child we understand these effects of conflict, which is why we focus our energies on helping and preventing the most vulnerable children from having their lives torn apart by the cycle of conflict, giving them a lifeline and a sense of hope for the future.

Despite ongoing violence and displacement, War Child and our partners are seizing every opportunity to reach children in Gaza with essential mental health support. By providing children with spaces to play, dance and sing, we are giving them space to just be children, even if only for a moment. Almost every child in Gaza has been exposed to deeply distressing events and trauma. We know the quicker we reach them, the quicker they can process their experiences and start to heal. You can help us give thousands more children the support they so desperately need. Please donate today 🔗 https://bit.ly/4dhlEZM

Providing #mentalhealth support to children associated with armed groups is a deeply sensitive process that requires local expertise and knowledge. This is the message Felix Ojok, our child protection specialist in South Sudan, will take to a webinar hosted by USAID next week. The virtual event aims to contribute to wider discussion within the sector about how to make psychosocial support programming more inclusive and effective. We welcome today's announcement that the UK government will restore funding to UNRWA. This will make a life-saving difference to children in urgent need of food, clean water, medical care and shelter. But in the face of the deadliest crisis for children this century, reaching a permanent ceasefire must now be the priority - the only way to get the 1.1 million children in Gaza safe access to the aid they so desperately need. We had a wonderful day hearing how the amazing funds the Jingle Jam community raised last December have been used to support children access education in Ukraine.❤️

Thank you War Child UK for having us 'round! At their Netherlands office this week, we met the team behind Can't Wait to Learn Ukraine, the program you funded last Jingle that helps children keep up with their education during the war. Jingle Jam fundraisers and Yogscast members Mousie and Zylus toured the office, learned about the program and its incredible impact, and got to play the games themselves. Stay tuned for the video of their experience, coming soon to a Jingle Jam near you!

"The Russian attacks this morning have killed civilians and caused indiscriminate destruction to critical infrastructure. We grieve with the families of the people killed and injured today. Even war has rules – yet children continue to suffer needlessly in this war. This must stop.” - Yana Zhambekova, War Child Ukraine Country Director #NotATarget
