Earlier this week, we broke that beauty incubator Luxury Brand Partners was exploring the sales of two of its biggest portfolio brands, Patrick Starrr’s One/Size and IGK Hair. In the 2010s, LBP was on a tear creating one-of-a-kind assets that beauty conglomerates were quick to acquire. Incubators have had their models tested in the last year, as more lines come to market and consumers question the authenticity of emerging labels, especially when backed by a celebrity or influencer. In my letter this week, I make the case that in order for smart incubators and their respective brands to thrive, these businesses need to throw out the tried-and-true playbook and treat talent more like the entrepreneurs that they are. Sign up to The Business of Beauty newsletter now to receive the must-read stories from our ever-expanding, global beauty and wellness coverage.

The British Fashion Council has laid out a five-point list of priorities for the incoming government. Though some, like the restoration of tax-free shopping for tourists, don’t appear to be on the cards, others could gain more support. Fashion didn’t get a mention in Labour’s manifesto, but the party has indicated it wants to support creative industries with more apprenticeships and emphasis on the arts in schools. In a tumultuous election year where more than two billion people around the world will go to the polls, the UK’s national vote this week has been decidedly predictable. The country’s left-leaning Labour Party is on course for a landslide victory, delivering a crushing defeat to the Conservatives with counting still underway at publication. But while the British electorate have resoundingly voted for change, the country’s new leadership is not expected to dramatically shift the landscape on key issues for the fashion sector. In fact, perhaps the most significant takeaway for the industry is the lack of drama this seismic defeat for the UK’s ruling party of 14 years is likely to bring in an increasingly polarised world. Incoming Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to deliver stability. Against a wider backdrop of political chaos, with populist and far right leaders in ascendance, that may be just what British fashion needs.
