Insights into being an Art Director on and off set. A lot of people don’t know or don’t understand what an Art Director does. Within each company, I believe the position varies. However, being an Art Director comes with a level of responsibility and expectancy that can be difficult. Currently, I work at Michael Malul, an ever-evolving and fast-growing niche fragrance company. Within my current position, I predominantly focus on product-based shoots. Although I have experience directing on-model shoots, I think it’s important for individuals to understand what goes into a product-based shoot. So here are a few things I’ve learned over the past few years that I try to continually remind myself of whenever I’m in need of reassurance within my role. Look into your products thoroughly. What is the story behind it? What are we trying to sell? What notes or ingredients is it composed of? What does the name say about the product? Most importantly, what about the product excites you - you, the Art Director? Passion. Passion is the easiest way to sell and portray a product. As an Art Director if you’re excited, passionate, and believe in the product, then the story you tell should easily be conveyed and you have nothing to worry about. Don’t over think the shot. When you see the shot - call it. No matter the size of your team, if the Art Director doesn’t call the shot this will inevitably affect every other department down the road. There’s no reason to continue shooting once you’ve achieved your goal. Does it fit the brief? Does it fit the sizing needed for the campaign? Is the styling, colors, and lighting on-brand? Then. Call. The. Shot. This not only will give you that reassurance in yourself but will also give the rest of your team confidence within themselves. Art is subjective. I remind myself that we’re here taking photos of products - maybe with or without models. We’re not saving lives. When I say this, I don’t mean to degrade or minimize what we do as an Art Director, but just remind myself how privileged we are to have this job - to help tell a story and bring something to life. Although the long list of daily “to-dos” may be daunting, try to relax, breathe, and remind yourself that your job is to bring the characters of a product you love to life and portray it in a fun-creative manner. Plus, as I mentioned before, art is subjective. So who’s going to tell you that you’re not doing your job right? And who would be your worst enemy other than yourself? Remember: Breathe and Believe in yourself. - Image from a recent fragrance launch. Art Direction: Myself

People that have worked under me all know my mantra. "What's your focus." You may be good at a lot of things, but what are you GREAT at? Then that's what we focus on. That's how we will position you to succeed and be showcased. A lot of people use the "jack of all trades" as a positive thing, which in some ways it can be, but it also sets you up to take on FAR more work than your job description entails. Keep in mind below. For a Sr. Graphic Designer... they want you to be able to do: Graphic Design Character Design 2D/3D Design HTML Coding Web Design CRM systems UI/UX knowledge SEO experience Platform design knowledge and also be a team player. lol. Rich Sherman is right on the money on his take of this. I've run into this personally as well. Yes, I CAN do motion graphics, graphic design, 3D work, etc... but is that what I applied for? The more you know.
This is unacceptable. A friend recently posted a Senior Graphic Designer role, and I was astonished by the extensive requirements. In my time, designers specialized, not tried to master everything. Companies should stop expecting all-in-one employees; greatness requires a collaborative team effort. Expecting one person to excel at everything is unrealistic and diminishes potential greatness. Creative Directors and hiring managers, reconsider these expectations for a more realistic and effective approach. ……especially for a Sr Graphic Designer. #hiring #jobseekers #hiringmanagers #designer

Brand Design & Activation | Google Certified UX Professional | does good work but doesn’t do “interview tests”, “spec work” or “task” . I believe they give a bad image to employees, employers and the industry
Should also turn water into wine, quickly

Exactly!!! I should technically be at a Senior Graphic designer role. But in the four years I was out of a job, I couldnt get one because of requirements like this. ESPECIALLY in regards to UX design and Web Design. They are vastly different than graphic design. They take a skill that I do not have. It’s not my specialty. I excel at Brand identity, digital documents, visual graphics. And accessibility for those with special needs. Not a study on human behavior and how they are going to click things in a web page or app design. These requirements need to change!!

Head of Creative at Lounge | Tedx Speaker | Cannes Future Lions & Creativepool Judge | Creative Marketer of the Year Award 2022 🏆 Coach & Consultant
How to get an in-house creative job at brands like Gymshark and Lounge 💡 I was 28 when I applied for a creative job at Gymshark. Before that, I had spent 7 years bouncing between jobs in Birmingham and London. - Telesales - Photography assistant - Handbag shop - Hotel bar - Receptionist - Junior graphic designer at a chicken factory - Junior artworker at a small advertising agency - Freelance artworker - Photographer's agent In that time, I applied for hundreds of roles at all kinds of dream companies. I got ghosted most of the time. And I had a lot of rejections. But eventually, the stars aligned. I found the creative job ad for Gymshark, put a bespoke portfolio together, studied their brand values, spoke passionately about the role, got the job. The rest is history. I suppose it was less of a 'career ladder' and more of a rollercoaster. I had no idea how it was going to end up. But I knew one thing: I knew I loved being creative. I think that's the key. When you find something you are really passionate about, you can focus entirely on doing that, rather than specific brands or job titles. I think it's your passion that guides you. And as a result, I think your attitude is infectious. People really like that. Brands really like that. So my advice is, focus a little less on the brand itself and really invest in you and what you enjoy doing. If you can do that, and get really good at it, you'll probably find that brands will start to approach you. #creativity #careeradvice

STEAL MY SLIDES #1 TL;DR: I’m sharing a case study deck the hiring manager called "the most detailed and well-rounded presentation they’ve seen.” Why bother? It might help you land your next creative job in the industry. --- Here’s the background story: On the hunt for my next gig, I applied for an Associate Creative Director role at a global fashion platform a few months back. To make it to the last round, I needed to submit two killer case studies: a year-long Lacoste campaign, and a disruptive BALENCIAGA activation idea for Paris Fashion Week. After 3 days of brainstorming, writing and procrastination, I ended up with a 47-slide long deck. And I want you to take it! Why? Because I wish someone would have showed me something like this! It’s not perfect and looking back I'd still tweak a few things, but I believe it’s a good start to get the creative juices flowing. Find the link in the first comment, and feel free to SHARE or DM me with questions about structure, implementation or thought-process. P.S: The hiring brand’s name was changed for legal reasons. P.P.S: Btw I'm still looking! (freelance and full time)
