Thrilled to see former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Sir Stephen Timms champion the creation of an Office for the #ImpactEconomy in City AM — and delighted that this echoes ideas in our #GoodBusinessManifesto! With constrained public spending, the next government has a game-changing opportunity to harness the power of the #ImpactEconomy — a coalition of purpose-driven businesses, social & impact investors and philanthropists — to unlock a potential £700 billion for national priorities. Previous attempts to collaborate with the Impact Economy have failed to fully tap into its potential. Prioritising partnerships with businesses, social & impact investors and philanthropists could help tackle the UK’s most pressing social, environmental and economic challenges. Here’s what an Office for the #ImpactEconomy could help achieve: 📈 Boost UK GDP by £149 billion and business R&D by £116 billion annually, and increase capital investment by £86 billion 💷 Support a £5.3bn pay rise for the lowest paid 💡 Unlock up to £50bn in social impact investment to tackle social issues and inequalities 🏢 Boost employment and reduce benefits payments by nearly £1 billion 🏡 Increase social housing availability tenfold by 2035, contributing £50 billion towards social & affordable housing 🌱 Double environmental philanthropy to £5.4 billion 🎯 Establish a £1bn Missions Fund for social outcomes partnerships to tackle child poverty, reduce reoffending and improve youth outcomes, generating nearly £9 of public value for every £1 spent 🏥 Deliver around £2 billion of fiscal savings on health spending 📢 Show your support by re-sharing this post with #ImpactEconomy. 💡 How can we make it a priority for businesses to balance all stakeholder interests alongside shareholder interests? The Environment Secretary's announcement that water companies will be required to change their articles of association is a huge step forward. However, in practice, this announcement only affects one sector - and it is not the only way to turbocharge #purposedriven decision-making. As set out in our #GoodBusinessManifesto, we believe that aside from mandatory change, there are other ways that businesses can voluntarily operate in a way that aligns the interests of people and planet with those of shareholders, and for this to trickle down to all stages of a business’s approach to decision-making. By introducing new model articles on the Companies House website, for example, it would be far easier for entrepreneurs to set up their company in a way that considers the interests of all stakeholders, as well as encourage existing businesses to change their existing articles. Our own research shows that the business appetite is there. Over half of purpose-driven entrepreneurs feel that an easier way to lock in the purpose of their company would be helpful. Virgin is a great example of a business taking action to better embed #purposedriven decision-making, independently of government requirements. As well as amending their articles of association, Virgin has implemented a “Purpose Decision-Making Filter” to consider all stakeholder interests in the day-to-day business decisions made across the organisation. In other words, their filter ensures the theoretical is continually translating into the practical. Our mission is to have more UK businesses operating in this way - so many already do, despite not yet having officially enshrined a commitment to people and planet in their constitution. Irrespective of sector or of potential legal requirement, there is significant scope for businesses to lead the way in this space. It's great to see some of the recommendations we made a year ago in our first #GoodJobsProject publication coming into fruition. Together with Severn Trent, ReGenerate created the #MidlandsEmploymentAlliance, a coalition of HR and talent leaders from major companies committed to dismantling barriers to employment. We are committed to creating and sustaining good jobs in the region. Our goal is to ensure that employers throughout the Midlands are encouraged and supported to design their roles and make them accessible to all in society. Work is underway to provide more opportunities for people with experience of the care system and for ex-offenders. We'll be sharing more about what is in the pipeline and how the work is expanding in the neear future. 👉 Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to know: https://lnkd.in/ebfRGSXc Severn Trent, Wincanton, Pertemps Network Group, Kier Construction, Cadent Gas Limited, Amazon, PET-Xi Training, EY Foundation, Balfour Beatty VINCI, Unipart Group, Birmingham Airport, Culina Group Limited
👋 Hello everyone. On Monday, Kat Barrett and I had the pleasure of hosting the first #MidlandsEmployerAlliance workshop focused on recruiting individuals with criminal records. We have a shared mission to help employers see the untapped potential of ex-offenders - who, given a second chance, can become some of the most loyal and hardworking employees. With recent announcements about prison overcrowding and the appointment of JamesTimpson as Prisons Minister, the timing couldn't have been better. Recruiting ex-offenders requires more than just good intentions; employers need dedicated support and some systems change to make it easier. Our workshop brought together those who have pioneered ex-offender recruitment as well as those that don't know where to start or are at the beginning of their journey. We also invited key organisations including the West Midlands Combined Authority, and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), as well as a couple of business networks and some support organisations too. This brilliant mix of people and responsibilities gave us bags of insight to begin to develop a robust and actionable plan to help employers lower barriers and intentionally target ex-offenders for their roles. This is exactly what we at ReGenerate created the #GoodJobsProject to do. Over the coming weeks and months, we'll be sharing quite a few updates from the project, so stay tuned. 👉 Sign up here to be the first to know: https://lnkd.in/ebfRGSXc #MidlandsEmployerAlliance #GoodJobsProject Massive thanks to Elizabeth Heath and Severn Trent for hosting us. Brilliant day at #PurposeFest2024 yesterday, listening to such great speakers talk about turning purpose into impact, how innovation can help deliver on purpose-led ambitions and embedding purpose in the value chain. Great panel on "Purpose in times of political change" chaired by ReGenerate Policy Director Esmé Clifford Astbury in conversation with Natalie Bennett, Green Party of England and Wales peer and former party leader, David Symons, UK Sustainability Director at WSP and Rishi Madlani, UK Head of Sustainability for Investec. Key insights below 👇 ➡ Leadership will need to come from businesses, not government alone. ➡ IMF points to growth slowing in the next decade, so there is a need to focus on social innovation to increase business productivity and retention rates. We have a real opportunity to renew focus on valuing people. ➡ We need to ensure that businesses who want to do good are operating in the same playing field as those who are further behind. ➡ A mission-led government will work best by addressing change across the whole of government, rather than adopt a department by department approach. ➡ Businesses need to partner with government by building on national priorities, rather than making new asks. Asks should connect to the government's key missions. ➡ Businesses should align pressing social and environmental issues with their core mission and purpose, rather than view them alongside core business activity. ➡ We need to restore people's individual sense of empowerment while encouraging collaborative work to deliver systems change. Huge thanks to Caroline Macfarland & The Crowd - give them a follow to keep up to date with future events!

Well this is interesting... The Government have committed for water companies to put customer + environment at the heart of company Articles of Association. Something we thought was a wonderful idea in our Good Business Manifesto, which is backed by so many leading companies and entrepreneurs. https://lnkd.in/e2zW4ayV https://lnkd.in/ejqizB-T So aligned too with amazing work done by people like Luke Fletcher Chris Turner Charmian (Char) Love James Perry The British Academy

With a new government in power, our fantastic Policy Director Esmé Clifford Astbury shares her thoughts on Stephen Timms' latest call for an Office for the #ImpactEconomy — and what such an Office could help achieve under a Labour government. Give it a read to find out more about how the UK can fully leverage the power of purpose-driven business, social & impact investing and philanthropy to help deliver national priorities👇 https://lnkd.in/eYNmr8bX
The Labour Party has been delivered a decisive victory today--and a daunting set of challenges, from worsening poverty and growing regional inequality to rising global emissions and increasingly stretched public services. But the new government doesn't have to face them alone: as we set out in ReGenerate's #GoodBusinessManifesto, it has a game-changing opportunity to harness the power of the #ImpactEconomy — a coalition of purpose-driven businesses, social & impact investors and philanthropists — to unlock a potential £700 billion for its five missions. Reflecting on the progression of the party's thinking on purpose-driven business in the run-up to the election, including Stephen Timms' call for an Office for the #ImpactEconomy in City AM earlier this week, I share my thoughts on what this could now mean in my latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ghfkWw8N Read Stephen Timms’ article: https://lnkd.in/e8KU2DGP Read our #GoodBusinessManifesto: https://lnkd.in/eiV4Tree Anna Swaithes Bella Landymore Ben Kellard Caroline Bryant-Bosa Dame Caroline Mason CBE Cath Dovey CBE Catherine Seymour Chris Turner Corinna Gehlen Danielle Dove David Robinson Dominic Llewellyn Grace Wyld Ian Taylor James Cameron James Westhead Joe McGarry Jovana Lalic Holly Branson Kieron Boyle Luke Fletcher May Al-Karooni Mhairi Littlewood Melanie Hayes Mike Rowlands Ngaire Woods Nicole Sykes Nigel Ball Richard Collier-Keywood Sarah Walker-Smith Seb Elsworth MBE Dr. Roger Barker Roisin Currie Stephen Bediako OBE Tess Godley Tessa Clarke

💡How can the next government partner with business to deliver on its priorities within a tight budget? In today’s world, the power of business to innovate and scale solutions to complex problems is a massive, yet largely untapped, resource—especially given the constraints of public spending. Unleashing the power of purpose-driven business could boost GDP by an estimated £149 billion per year. Research shows that businesses and investors are eager to tackle society’s and the environment’s greatest challenges. Yet the current machinery of government not being adequately set up for this purpose. What if we could harness this potential effectively? In our #GoodBusinessManifesto, we outline that the next government could: 🏢Establish a joint HM Treasury-Department for Business and Trade Office for the Impact Economy. This office would serve as a hub for innovation and strategic alignment. 🧠 Invite leading experts from the sector to craft a comprehensive strategy for the impact economy, ensuring that we leverage the best insights and practices. 🌟Support and engage with place-based partnerships to replicate and scale up business-led solutions to our national challenges, creating a ripple effect of positive change. By bridging the gap between government and business, we can create a powerhouse of innovation and progress, driving sustainable solutions and making a significant difference in our communities.
