What's been going on in Sustainable Fashion this week? ⬇ 1) A few weeks ago we saw G-Star RAW launch their 'homegrown' cotton range. Last week Zara owner Inditex has bought a stake in US cellular agriculture start up GALY, which is working to develop lab-grown cotton. 2) The Woolmark Company, which has certified wool products for 60 years, has unveiled its first recycled wool specification to support the shift towards circular wool production. The recycled wool specification ensures that products contain at least 20% recycled wool - both pre-consumer sources, such as cutting waste, and post-consumer sources. 3) Meanwhile, one to watch - GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) plan to launch a new standard for a wider range of sustainable fibres, using the GOTS framework. 4) As we see a wave of 'sustainable' innovations entering the market in the fashion industry, last week saw textile dyeing innovator Coloreel, known for its instant thread dyeing technology, file for bankruptcy. The concept is one thread, dye on demand, only producing what you need when you need it, but the company was unable to scale quickly enough to secure the backing needed for investors and potential industry partners. 5) In supply chain news, Mulberry England are the latest company to have their near-term Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission reduction targets validated by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As part of their 'Made to Last' Manifesto, Mulberry are committed to supporting regenerative agricultural practices, and have set Scope 3 targets using the SBTi's Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance. 6) In recycling news, researchers have developed a chemical processing technique that can break down fabrics (including synthetics) into reusable molecules for new fibres, regardless of what materials they are or if they are a mix of materials. The technique is still in development, but the process is said to take just 15 minutes. Watch this space... 7) Investing in the future of fashion means investing in the right people who will drive real change, and Monsoon Accessorize have announced the launch of its 'Fashion Futures Student Scholarship' which will be awarded to trailblazing students at University of the Arts London who are working to drive sustainability in the fashion industry. 8) Take a deep breath ⚫ As SHEIN continue to churn out reportedly over 10,000 products to market per day, and they move closer to their listing on the London Stock Exchange, last week they announced plans to invest €250 million in sustainability and circularity in Britain and Europe over the next 5 years! I'm in disbelief but will continue to research and update you.... 🔗 Links to articles in comments To receive this update direct to your inbox each week, sign up to our weekly newsletter at www.thisisenkel.com SPONSORED BY Recomme.co Making circularity work for you https://www.recomme.co/ #sustainablefashion #enkel #sustainablefashionschool Image: Mulberry England

Adopting circularity is like baking a cake. 🎂 Wait, hear us out… Clothing resale is expected to make up a tenth of the global fashion market in 2025. Last year, global sales of secondhand clothes rose by 18% to $197bn (£156bn) and are forecast to reach $350bn (£273bn) in 2028.* And the clothing rental market is on a similar trajectory, predicted to achieve a CAGR of more than 11% between 2023 and 2027.* The best way you can enjoy a slice of the circularity cake and avoid European EPR regulation fines is to bake resale, rental, repair and recycling initiatives into your business sooner rather than later. And at Recomme, we get that not everyone has the right ingredients or tools for the perfect bake. Plus, every brand has different tastes. It’s important to get the recipe just right. Instead of a generic off-the-shelf product, our Recomme solution partners your business with the best circularity services to create something that's bespoke, fully customisable and puts you in control. Whether you're looking to add rental, resale, repair, recycling or more, our award-winning, end-to-end circularity solution: 🍰 Seamlessly integrates with your existing business.  🍰 Reduces negative impact while generating new revenue.  🍰 Offers transparency and control across all your data.  🍰 Re-engages existing customers and unlocks new audiences.  🍰 Helps you build towards a truly closed-loop system. With Recomme, you can have your cake and eat it. What's been going on in Sustainable Fashion this week? ⬇ 1) According to ABI Research, over 62.5 billion Digital Product Passports (DPPs) will be issued worldwide by 2030, driving revenues of an estimated $1.59 billion in software and IT designed to accelerate traceability and drive positive change in the fashion industry. 2) A consortium of seven companies across 5 countries have established a supply chain to produce more sustainable polyester fibre for The North Face in Japan. Instead of fossil materials, renewable, bio-based materials and CCU will be used in the manufacturing of polyester fibres. For those not familiar with 'CCU', this stands for 'Carbon Capture & Utilisation' and is the process of gathering carbon CO2 from emissions sources and using it to make new materials. 3) Fibe, a material science start-up, which creates new cotton-like textiles from potato harvest waste, have been announced the winner of the Fashion District - London Manufacturing Futures Innovation Challenge 2024. Runners up included Sequinova, who make biodegradable sequins out of cellulose, and Fab Materials, who convert fashion waste into furniture. 4) A latest report from regenagri (an international agriculture program) has outlined that the amount of land under its certification in 2023 has tripled, from 487,000 hectares in 2022, to 1.46 million hectares. The Regenagri supports farms and organisations in transitioning to regenerative farming practices, increasing soil health, encouraging biodiversity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sequestering CO2. 5) Over the last couple of years more reports have been made public highlighting the risk of microplastics being found in human bloodstream, but now a latest report suggests that PFAS can also be absorbed through the skin and reach the bloodstream. PFAS (Per and polyfluroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals widely used in the apparel industry for things like water resistance, anti crease, stain resistant etc. They are also known as 'forever chemicals' as they are very difficult to break down and are a risk to the environment and human health. 6) Always good to look at other industries and what we can learn, and last week the LEGO Group launched a 'Supplier Sustainability Programme', recognising the crucial role that suppliers play in helping them achieve their targets. With 99% of carbon emissions coming from outside the companies operations, mostly from suppliers and the supply chain, The Supplier Sustainability Programme is founded on collaboration, and the power of working together to create real lasting change and a more sustainable future. 🔗 Links to articles in comments To receive this update direct to your inbox each week, sign up to our newsletter at www.thisisenkel.com SPONSORED BY Recomme.co Making circularity work for you https://www.recomme.co/ #sustainablefashion #enkel #sustainablefashionschool

What does the UK general election mean for circularity in fashion? 🗳️ Tomorrow marks a big day for the country. And, a big day for the fashion industry, too. In recent years, the fashion and luxury sector has struggled in the face of Brexit, the cost of living crisis and a dying high street. For the UK fashion industry to thrive as we transition to be more sustainable, we need the government to take a more active role. Ahead of the election, the British Fashion Council identified five priorities for the next government: - Restore tax-free shopping for tourists  - Invest in trade and export for UK fashion designers  - Support the fashion-education sector  - Develop a new gen of business and skilled workers in the industry  - Introduce legislation to activate sustainable business practices At Recomme, we’re adding one more to the list: Support fashion's transition to circularity. ♻️⭕ While none of the leading UK political party manifestos talk about fashion specifically, some touch on supporting a circular economy. Here’s our summary... 👇 🟢 Unsurprisingly, the Green Party is all for funding circularity to tackle climate change. It’s keen to adopt a circular economy to reduce waste and encourage a shift from ownership to usership. A.K.A getting more people on board with resale, rental and repair. 🔴 Labour's manifesto mentions transitioning to a circular economy but doesn’t include targets or steps to get there. Its main sustainability promise is to make the UK a "clean energy superpower" through Great British Energy, a publicly owned company. 🟠 While the Lib Dems don't mention circularity by name, the party has plans for a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and wants to hold big businesses accountable for addressing climate issues. The UK Fashion and Textile Association backs a similar intelligent EPR scheme for fashion and textiles where the fees generated would develop the circular economy! 🔵 The Conservatives' manifesto doesn’t touch on the circular economy at all.  It opts to rely on market power, betting on innovation and the private sector to direct sustainability. 🟣 Similarly, the Reform manifesto doesn’t touch on circularity either. It wants to scrap net-zero goals altogether and boost the economy instead. However, if elected, Reform says it will reintroduce VAT-free shopping for tourists - one of the BFC’s priorities. But, there is one promising area 4 of the 5 parties agree on... The development of AI technology. For circularity, this is crucial. 🦾 At Recomme, we see first-hand how AI is revolutionising textile waste management and its potential to improve monitoring, recycling and end-of-life processes. Want to know more about how each party will affect fashion? Vogue Business did a handy breakdown, here: https://lnkd.in/dtyXjH74 #Circularity #UKElection #CircularEconomy

Here's the headlines from Sustainable Fashion this week ⬇ 1) Last week John Lewis & Partners announced they have teamed up with the University of Exeter to develop a framework and strategy for circular designed products, created in line with the circular design toolkit from WRAP. The 20 piece collection includes nightwear and bedding, and supports the retailers commitment that 100% of new 'own-brand' products are to be designed with circularity in mind by 2028. 2) In material news, US workwear brand Carhartt has joined the US Cotton Trust Protocol and Better Cotton in a move towards more responsibly sourced cotton. 3) Biotech specialist CARBIOS has struck a deal with Chinese textile group Zhink Group, to build a bio-recycling plant in China. The plant will use Carbios technology which enables recycling of PET plastic and textile waste into virgin-like products, with the aim of achieving true circularity. 4) Italian synthetic yarn manufacturer Fulgar has launched a new bio-based Nylon (branded as Q-Geo) , which is derived partially from corn-waste. 5) Australian recycling company Samsara Eco, who work with lululemon, has raised AUS $100 million ($65m) in latest funding. The funds will be used to scale-up global recycling capabilities using their enzyme technology to recycle apparel waste, diverting millions of tonnes of plastics away from landfill and incineration. 6) At last weeks The Sustainable Angle Future Fabrics Expo, UK bio-based start up 3D Bio-Tissues (powered by BSF Enterprise) launched their high quality 100% ethical-lab grown leather sample. The leather is grown without harming animals, and can still be treated using traditional methods, and meets the growing demand for alternative leather products. 7) As part of their 'Plan A - Another Life' Campaign - Marks and Spencer have announced a clothing repair service in partnership with SOJO. According to M&S, only 10% of the population feel confident enough to repair clothing themselves, and 60% of consumers want retailers to offer more services which support them to live a more circular life. 8) This week Barbour launched their rental service in partnership with Oxfam at Glastonbury, offering festival goers the opportunity to rent pre-loved, upcycled wax jackets for £45 for the duration of the event. Love the concept, intrigued to know if they all get returned after the rental period 🤔 9) Last week eBay announced the launch of 'Rocket Man Resale' featuring hundreds of items from Elton John's wardrobe! All proceeds will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. 10) The latest on the SHEIN - UK human rights group Stop Uyghur Genocide has launched a legal campaign to stop the flotation on the London Stock Exchange (potentially worth £50 billion), although paperwork for a potential London IPO has been filed by Shein 🤮 Have a great week Lydia SPONSORED BY Recomme.co Making circularity work for you https://www.recomme.co/ Image: Barbour

Your circularity round-up. Closing the loop on circular news. ⭕ 1️⃣ The second-hand clothing market continues to boom. Vinted’s latest Impact Report found that more than 40% of its UK members reported that over half of their wardrobe consists of second-hand finds. The growing appetite for second-hand clothes is great news for fashion businesses looking to add buy-back schemes and resale to their existing systems. While peer-to-peer platforms aren’t going anywhere, the shopper’s advantage of brands and retailers having a bigger stake in the second-hand market is quality control, consistent pricing, better customer service and reliable delivery. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eHhPuzih 2️⃣ Recycling textiles, especially PET polyester, is a common challenge. Fortunately, biotech recycling company CARBIOS and circularity tech firm TOMRA Textiles have teamed up to open the first commercial plant in France to recycle polyester fabrics. Together, they aim to close the gap between the collection of textile waste and innovative technologies for textile-to-textile recycling. We foresee the duo's recycling solution having a great impact on fashion brands and retailers' access to better recycling options. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKB8rYeG  3️⃣ John Lewis & Partners has launched a circular collection designed to minimise waste and maximise longevity with products that will “stand the test of time.” The initial range of 20 items including pyjamas, babywear, knitwear, mattresses, duvets and pillows, marks the beginning of an overhaul that will reach thousands of products by 2028. These durable items purposely designed to be passed on make perfect closed-loop system candidates! We’re excited to see the John Lewis collection grow and how it will maximise the potential for integrating resale, rental and repair options into its existing system. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eMcRU6RR 4️⃣ As members of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we were pleased to see its latest report: ‘Pushing the Boundaries of EPR Policy for Textiles,’ stressing the need to drive a circular fashion system. The report highlights the role of EPR policy to "place responsibility on producers for the collection, sorting and recirculation of their products when these are discarded by citizens.” A.K.A. adopting rental, resale, repair, recycling and end-of-life options is how fashion brands and retailers can stay ahead of the game. What's been going on in Sustainable Fashion this week? ⬇ 1) First up, Ralph Lauren have announced that their opening and closing outfits for the 2024 Olympics, will be made from entirely recycled cotton, working with NFW (Natural Fiber Welding) to use their recycled material 'Clarus' in their new collections. They are The Olympics as an opportunity to showcase what's possible for the industry. 2) H&M have launched their first collection from regenerative certified organic cotton. Regenerative certified organic cotton is grown without the use of artificial pesticides or fertilisers, and focuses on restoring soil whilst protecting the lives of farmers and farming communities. 3) Marks and Spencer have announced they will be using alpaca again in their ranges, now that Textile Exchange have launched the 'Responsible Alpaca Standard' (RAS), which M&S said 'provided the confidence to start sourcing the fibre again'. Alpaca was originally banned back in 2020 after an investigation from PETA about how alpaca is farmed. The u-turn is expected to cause backlash from animal activists. 4) British brand GRENSON SHOES are launching a line of footwear called D-Stock, which utilises left over leather or 'deadstock'. The uppers are made up of different leathers, making each pair unique, and since they will be produced in limited numbers (depending on what's available) they are highly desirable. 5) Diane von Furstenberg has announced a global collaboration with fibre producer Lenzing Group to produce fibres from sustainably managed wood sources such as Tencel and Lenzing EcoVero, which are made with less carbon emissions and water consumption than conventional sources. 6) Biotech firm CARBIOS and recycling and sorting specialist TOMRA have joined forces through setting up their first recycling plant to recycle polyester textiles. The partnership aims to close the gap between the collection of textiles waste, and the innovative technologies needed to produce recycled polyester through textile 2 textile recycling. 7) Meanwhile, Ellen MacArthur Foundation have released a new report 'Pushing the Boundaries of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy for textiles to tackle the global waste from fashion. The reports highlights the need for funding to cover the costs associated with managing discarded textiles, the need to build infrastructures to collect and sort waste textiles, whilst holding the textile industry responsible for its role in the system. 8) Finally for this week, Parisian womenswear brand ba&sh are the latest fashion company to become B Corp certified by B Lab, scoring 98 points, vs an industry standard of 80.9.They are measured (ongoing) across 5 impact areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. Why have we built a business to enable fashion circularity? ⭕ At Recomme, our vision is clear: to accelerate the fashion industry’s transition to a circular economy. That means less waste and fewer emissions, as well as reduced costs and optimised resources. We’re here to help all brands and retailers make circularity a meaningful (a.k.a value-creating) part of their business. 🚀 The desire for seamless, transparent and commercial circular solutions is already there. We know, because we've spoken to lots of you. And consumer behaviour shows a similar pattern. ➡️ The clothes resale market in the UK grew by 149% between 2016 and 2022. And, it's predicted to rise by 67.5% from 2022 to 2026. (GlobalData Plc) But, we get it. The thought of building a circularity roadmap is overwhelming. Especially when no one has given you a blueprint. You've got to do it whilst: 👉 Delivering for the business commercially  👉 Meeting stakeholder expectations  👉 Improving customer engagement  👉 All at a manageable pace Ultimately, you need a way to build and scale circularity alongside everything else. And that's where Recomme comes in. We make circularity work for you. As an award-winning circularity platform, here's how we make this happen.👇 For us, circularity is turning old stuff into new stuff in a closed-loop system. It's adding value without needing new resources. We seamlessly add resale, rental, repair, recycling and more to your business with a bespoke plan to reduce negative impact whilst fueling your growth.
