The Railway Industry Association (RIA) - championing a dynamic rail supply industry. We help to grow a sustainable, high-performing, railway supply industry, and to export UK rail expertise and products. RIA has more than 360 companies in membership in a sector that contributes £36 billion in economic growth and £11 billion in tax revenue each year, as well as employing 600,000 people—more than the workforce of Birmingham. It is also a vital industry for the UK’s economic recovery, supporting green investment and jobs in towns and communities across the UK. RIA’s membership is active across the whole of railway supply, covering a diverse range of products and services and including both multi-national companies and SMEs (60% by number). RIA works to promote the importance of the rail system to UK plc, to help export UK expertise around the globe and to share best practice and innovation across the industry. Leaders from the UK’s light rail sector will be in West Yorkshire on Wednesday and Thursday for the UK Light Rail Conference. The two-day event, the only conference dedicated solely to light rail in the UK, will this year be held at the University of Leeds. Commenting on the first King’s Speech under a Labour Government since 1950, Railway Industry Association (RIA) Chief Executive Darren Caplan said: “The Railway Industry Association (RIA) welcomes today’s King’s Speech as a strong legislative programme for driving growth by building sustainable infrastructure and improving transport. “RIA and our members support the Government’s pledge to establish a reformed and unified railway system under Great British Railways tasked with improving affordability, reliability and performance. Members joined us for today’s meeting of the Railway Industry Association (RIA) Light Rail Member Interest Group, focusing on light rail plans across West Yorkshire as well as best practice from across the UK and overseas. Luke Albanese Mass Transit Director at West Yorkshire Combined Authority, spoke about plans for the West Yorkshire Mass Transit system followed by Andy Lucas from Mainspring who gave a UK and worldwide Light rail market overview. James McCaffery MBA, MSc (PPM) Head of UK Programmes at Stadler UK provided the delegates with an overview of the Glasgow, Merseyrail and Nexus metro fleets and the role of the UK supply chain in these fleets. The post networking session was opened by Adam Bevan from the The University of Huddersfield who presented on the university’s international expertise in light rail R&D followed by Martin Little of BCIMO Very Light Rail Innovation Centre who closed the event with a presentation on the centre’s benefit as a unique Light Rail asset and how that can benefit development of the UK opportunity in mass transit.
