About us
Peace Direct believe that local people have the power to find their own solutions to conflict. Our mission is to help them to make this happen. Local people are the key to preventing, resolving and healing conflicts. They are the best way to break recurrent cycles of violence and make peace last. And increasingly they want to move away from depending on outside help, towards building their own futures. In addition, Peace Direct publishes Peace Insight, providing information on local peace-building organisations in areas of conflict, advocating international development that prioritises the views and leadership of people and organisations in the countries affected, over those of outsiders from the international community. www.peacedirect.org

In our #PeaceStartsHere Manifesto #4, CENTRE PEACEBUILDING AROUND LOCAL PEOPLE, as a local peacebuilder dedicated to supporting internally displaced persons affected by armed conflict, I, along with my co-creators, strongly advocate for funders and donors to prioritize human-centered, collaborative, and community-led approaches in global peacebuilding efforts. It is imperative to empower local peacebuilders and challenge the dominance of external agendas in shaping peacebuilding initiatives. Global peacebuilding efforts often sideline local voices, particularly those of women and marginalized communities. To address this, we must decolonize the role of global actors in peacebuilding. This requires acknowledging and rectifying historical power imbalances, and placing local knowledge and leadership at the forefront of peacebuilding agendas, policies, strategies, and program designs. Investments and policies must be shaped by and for peacebuilding. We call upon international institutions, governments of the Global North, and NGOs to: 1. Prioritize existing indigenous and local solutions by first assessing local efforts, needs, and capacities before introducing external solutions, embracing the diversity and intersectionality of local peacebuilders. 2. Move away from traditional, often neo-colonial approaches such as "empowerment" and "capacity-building," recognizing and amplifying local capacities instead. 3. Include traditional institutions like elders’ councils in all conflict resolution and community cohesion efforts, promoting intergenerational dialogue and storytelling to highlight the contributions of young peacebuilders. 4. Invest in thorough analysis, time, and institutional knowledge to understand the complex factors and impacts of conflicts on communities, integrating this understanding into relevant strategies, agendas, policies, and program designs.
