Great gardens, great cake, great causes raising millions for nursing & health charities and promoting gardens for health
About us
Since 1927, the National Garden Scheme has been inviting garden owners to open their exceptional gardens to the public, giving people unique access to some of Britain’s most beautiful and memorable gardens while raising money for charity through entry fees, teas and cake. Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, the National Garden Scheme is the most significant charitable funder of nursing charities in the UK - having donated £55million over the last 90 years. This year the National Garden Scheme donated a record £3.1million from funds raised at open gardens in 2017 and supported charities including: Macmillan Cancer Support; Marie Curie; Hospice UK; Carers Trust; Queen’s Nursing Institute; Parkinson’s UK; Perennial; National Autistic Society; and MS Society. There are over 3,600 private gardens open to the public in 2018, all of which can be found by vising the National Garden Scheme website, or in the Garden Visitor’s Handbook, which is published annually and available via the National Garden Scheme shop and at all good book retailers.

National Garden Scheme reposted this
Support #nursing & health charities by visiting our #gardens tomorrow 12pm-4.30pm for the National Garden Scheme (£7 adults, children free). NGS has donated over £67m to nursing & health charities through organising opening of private gardens. 3,500 gardens will open to the public tomorrow. Our gardens have been open for 60+ years and we are delighted to be participating again this year. In 2023, over £3m was donated by NGS, with principal beneficiaries being The Queen's Nursing Institute, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie UK, Hospice UK, Carers Trust and Parkinson's UK. As well as seeing our gardens tomorrow, enjoy tea and homemade cakes provided and served by supporters of Thames Hospice. All proceeds will go to Thames Hospice. The Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show 2024 was a show stopper for the National Garden Scheme. With our Gold Medal winning garden designed by Tom Stuart-smith and sponsored by Project Giving Back, the magical woodland garden was brought to life by Crocus.co.uk bringing joy to the thousands who visited the show or saw it broadcast by the BBC. This film captures the week with its spirit of joy and community that is synonymous with the National Garden Scheme. Thank you to everyone who visited, watched, volunteered, donated, wrote about us, featured us and loved the garden! It begins a new chapter for the charity as we move towards our centenary in 2027. In Volunteers Week (1-7 June) the National Garden Scheme is celebrating its amazing family of volunteers. The success of the National Garden Scheme, and the significant amounts of money it donates to its beneficiaries, would not be possible without the dedicated support of the charity’s garden owners and its volunteers. In 2023, 3,389 gardens opened for the Scheme supported by 585 volunteers all sharing their incredible enthusiasm, expertise and generosity which is at the heart of everything the charity achieves. “Whether a garden opens once or over a number of decades every garden is important,” says Chairman, Rupert Tyler. “We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to all of our garden owners and all the volunteers who support them. Without their combined dedication and passion we would not have become the most significant funder of nursing charities in the UK or been able to give £3,403,960 to our beneficiaries in 2023. And, as we head towards our centenary year in 2027, we would like to thank everyone who has helped create such a vibrant, inspiring and enduring community that gives so much pleasure to visitors and raises so much money for good causes.” Volunteers take on a number of roles from county organisers and treasurers to publicity and social media support, each one ensuring the smooth running of National Garden Scheme garden openings. Many bake cakes and support individual garden openings too. In 2024, some of our garden owners enjoyed a starring role when plants from their gardens were incorporated into the charity’s RHS Gold Medal winning garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith (who has opened his own garden for the charity for 30 years too). As Tom says, “The donation of plants from garden owners exemplifies the spirit of generosity synonymous with the charity.” One of the fabulous perks of volunteering for the National Garden Scheme is the opportunity to support the charity at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (and other RHS shows) during the year. #VolunteersWeek Watch our video and read more here: https://lnkd.in/eVgPyVCf
