It may have been a snap election, but there has been time enough for a sea of words, multiple TV debates, hard hats and factory visits, claims and counterclaims, caution when we might have hoped for more, recklessness when we might have expected care. And, of course, the bungee jumping. At LDA, we’ve used the run-up to set out five of the changes we would like to see. Changes that are bold but achievable, and close to our hearts and the work that we do. See if you agree. #election #changeweneedtosee #infrastructure #design #urbandesign #planning #playfulcities #healthystreets #wellbeing #housing #nature #biodiversity #climatechange #landscapearchitecture #change #whatnow?

Connecting people and place through landscape
About us
At LDA Design, we make great places and shape the world around us for the better. We do this by connecting people and place through landscape. The origin of the word landscape is to create a place where people belong. We follow the principles of ‘first life, then spaces, then buildings’. Whether we are designing a new district, restoring a park or regenerating an estate, we start with what people want and need. LDA Design led the final landscape masterplan and detailed design for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of Europe’s most successful new parklands. We have designed and delivered some of the UK’s most challenging city centre public realm projects, including London’s Battersea Power Station, Stratford Waterfront and Strand Aldwych. This work includes George Street in Edinburgh and the transformation of public realm in Newcastle City Centre. We have developed a public realm strategy for Liverpool that will shape the centre for the next 25 years. Our award-winning partnership with Camden has transformed West End streets, carving out new green space and creating a healthier, safer, and more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our generation. As the UK weans itself off fossil fuels, a substantially increased demand for a reliable and secure mix of low-carbon energy lies ahead. Our long-standing commitment to renewable energy, since its infancy, places us at the forefront to help clients respond to this global challenge. Our experience, together with our creativity and practical appreciation of issues, allow us to provide robust advice and leadership that reflects an understanding of commerciality, risk and opportunity. We helped secure consent for Hornsea Three, which will be the UK’s largest offshore windfarm. LDA Design is proud to be 100% employee owned. We are landscape architects, urban designers, planners, environmental planners and EIA coordinators.

Ending another busy week with this fantastic bunch from LDA Design's #London studio who ran the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge in #BatterseaPark raising money for Centrepoint. A few personal bests were clocked, no muscles strained and a good time had by all. Great t-shirt design by the amazing Branwen Morus. Thanks rebecca keeling and Susie Walston for not only organising LDA Design's entry but running too. Bravo. 👏 Benjamin Walker #employeeownership #employeeowners #eo #teamspirit #london #gettogether #batterseapark #run #ldadesign

Battersea Power Station announced as a winner of The RIBA National Awards 2024! It was announced earlier today that the Grade II* listed Power Station is amongst 26 projects to win The RIBA National Awards 2024, having been selected from a list of over 100 regional winners. The announcement has led to fantastic coverage across leading publications such as Country and Town House, naming Battersea Power Station as ‘One of The UK’s Best Buildings’. RIBA described Battersea Power Station as ‘a deeply impressive scheme that combines carefully restored heritage assets, high-quality homes, and a contemporary retail experience, all tied together with an industrial aesthetic appropriate to the original power station’s awesome scale and character.’ Congratulations also to WilkinsonEyre, who were the lead architects on the restoration of the Grade II* listed landmark, which sits at the heart of our new 42-acre riverside neighbourhood, transformed from a derelict ruin into a new town centre with over 140 shops, restaurants, bars and leisure venues for visitors to explore in and around the iconic landmark.

We all know about the serious water stress in the East of England and what this means for existing communities and future growth. So, we are super excited to share emerging designs for new #reservoirs in north #Cambridgeshire and in south #Lincolnshire. The reservoirs proposed by Anglian Water Services and Cambridge Water are planned to help secure future water supply and strengthen resilience to drought, whilst also protecting the #environment by enabling a reduction in the amount of water taken from environmentally sensitive rivers and underground aquifers. Each reservoir can hold about 55 million cubic metres of water and combined they could serve up to 750,000 homes a year. What we’re also really excited about is that both reservoirs, masterplanned by LDA Design and Fereday Pollard, could really benefit #biodiversity, options for recreation, and health and #wellbeing. The design thinking, which is sensitive to the #landscape, brings people, #nature, water and activity together. Find out more ➡ https://lnkd.in/dMEbwfiC Fens Reservoir details here ➡ https://lnkd.in/eJHMgbka The design for the Fens reservoir is inspired by ammonite fossils found below the site during excavation, and dating from a time when the land was under the North Sea. Lincs Reservoir details here ➡ https://lnkd.in/e3kPU22Z The emerging designs are released by Anglian Water Services and Cambridge Water in support of engagement with local communities. Don’t wait to feedback your thoughts. We recently had the opportunity to run a workshop on #sustainable #design with future changemakers at the Cabot Learning Federation’s ‘Our Earth, Our Future’ conference in #Bristol, which we loved contributing to. The workshop focused on ideas for a pedestrianised King Street in the heart of Bristol. The students all came with very different interests, including geography, art, sociology, maths and politics, so it was a great opportunity to explore how all of these disciplines interconnect when it comes to placemaking. Some brilliant ideas reflecting this variety of interests emerged during the group work, whether it was how we go about making our streets greener, or thinking about performance, public art and material reuse. Inspiring stuff. Lots of questions too about working in our industry. Well done to LDA Design facilitators Sian Berkley and Mark Stewart. Good to also find out that three quarters of the students who attended the conference felt more empowered to speak and act on the issues raised around #ecology and #sustainability. 💪 Clare Wilks Catherine Ham #CLF #CabotLearningFederation #ldadesign #socialvalue #givingback #careers #futurecareers #students #landscapearchitecture #urbandesign #planning #bettercities #placemaking

So, a big day yesterday. Amidst a flurry of activity, the Government committed to doubling #onshore #wind energy by 2030, dropping two footnotes in place since 2015 in the National Planning Policy Framework (#NPPF) that amounted to a de facto ban on new onshore #windfarms. The move includes revising #planning policy to place onshore wind on the same footing as all other #energy development and #infrastructure. This is a huge boost to the UK’s energy security and shift to #renewables. The change is immediate and will be confirmed to parliament later this month when the Commons resumes sitting. Policy statement ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eCbBxqJy Everyone at LDA Design is excited at the prospect of being able to help to bring sleeping projects back or working on new ones. With the news that temperatures between July 2023 and June 2024 were the highest on record, a year of being 1.64C hotter than in preindustrial times (https://lnkd.in/dW42Ma-4) means we can't move fast enough. LDA Design’s #publicrealm lead, Sophie Thompson, has a new regular column in Building Design. In her first column and on the eve of the #Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, Sophie delights in the ambition to make the Seine swimmable again and reflects on the pace and the scale of #environmental change across the city as it sets out to become “the greenest big city in Europe”. She looks back too to London 2012, when the idea of the using the Games to create a wider lasting #legacy beyond sport was still a relatively new idea. ‘Swimming in the Seine’ is a great read. Dip into the waters ... and look out for Sophie's future columns. https://lnkd.in/epVysTBz Ben Flatman LDA Design #greenercity #landscapedesign #landscapearchitecture #healthycity #carfree #wilding #activettravel #parisolympics #greeninfrastructure #legacy

Oh, wow. Battersea Power Station won the #Placemaking and #SocialValue prize at the 2024 Property Awards I Property Week. Fantastic recognition. We’re delighted to announce that Battersea Power Station won the Placemaking and Social Value Award at last night’s Property Awards 2024. Battersea Power Station is a blueprint for urban mixed-use regeneration, with community at its heart. The vibrant new town centre for Wandsworth, which is home to over 140 British, international and small independent brands welcomed over 11.2 million visitors in 2023, a fifth of which were local residents from Wandsworth. It has created 6,500 jobs to date, including 3,500 following the opening of the Power Station and Electric Boulevard, and has donated over £6 million to local charities, groups and causes with over £4 million of this going to Wandsworth organisations. The development’s success has also been underpinned by the opening of its very own zone 1 Northern Line Underground station, significantly increasing connectivity to both the estate and the wider Battersea area, and its free calendar of events and cultural activities. The Battersea Games has returned for another year and is now is full swing throughout the summer months, building on last years success, this event has paved the way for Battersea Power Station being announced as an Official Team GB Fanzone and an Official ParalympicsGB Fanzone for Paris 2024.

Starting the week with the great news that #StratfordWaterfront residential quarter has secured #planning approval. This means 700 glorious new riverfront homes neighbouring East Bank's cultural powerhouse and benefitting from all that Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has to offer. Fantastic working with Ballymore I London Legacy Development Corporation I Howells and O'Donnell + Tuomey to create a really special place to live, featuring a #landscape by LDA Design that is designed to be social and playable. So, the end of what it would be fair to say has been a "big" week! In posts over the last few weeks, we've set out some of the bold but achievable changes that we'd like to see. https://lnkd.in/eSEzr4xV Eager to see what comes next. In amongst it all, our #Oxford studio - and a few younger members of the team - had a fantastic 'summer' barbeque and it even stayed dry. With LDA Design Director and IT lead, Steve Dredge, on the pizzas, Siobhan Gibbons and Paul Lishman doing an amazing job on the grill 💪 Catch up on Monday.
