The 2024 school’s Just One Tree Day will be on October 18th! Why not ask ask your school to sign up and get the date in the school diary before the end of summer term? Most schools hold a non-uniform or ‘wear something green’ day, but JUST ONE TREE Day can be any kind of fundraiser you want it to be. It creates a springboard for environmental education, reduces climate anxiety through positive action and helps compensate for your school’s environmental impact. Join children, parents and teachers in demonstrating the positive impact JUST ONE individual can have on the environment. Every £1 raised plants at least 1 tree. The Atlantic Forest protects one of the world’s richest biodiversities, provides unparalleled scenic beauty and contributes to freshwater supply for over half of the Brazilian population and also to climate regulation in some of the biggest Brazilian cities. There is only seven (7) per cent of the biome left in its natural state and 60 per cent of the animals which threatened with extinction in Brazil depend on this environment to survive. The GDST schools have collectively planted a whopping 17,500 trees by taking part in JUST ONE Tree Day. Yesterday, Amanda got to walk them through the impact they're having around the world at their GDST (The Girls' Day School Trust) summer #PSHE conference. Their journey kicked off in Mexico, where their mangroves are protecting whales and sea turtles, heading next to the mountains of Peru, where their Polylepis trees provide water security, and ending up in Madagascar where they looked at how the GDST forest is growing and transforming the landscape. 620 schools have taken part in JUST ONE Tree Day and they're having a whopping impact. In fact, through this event, the children have now funded the planting of over 330,000 trees which will absorb an incredible 102,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. Plus it helps bring free climate change education into the classrooms and helps alleviate climate anxiety among the children. Today's Earth Day - of course for us, EVERY day is Earth Day. But today we're taking a moment to pause and look at the impact we've had on so many landscapes, people and even wildlife around the world. We spend so much time driving forwards, but time to reflect is important too. From sea turtles and whales to lemurs and elephants. From the communities that will be protected by our mangroves on Biak Island in Indonesia to those who will gain more water security from our high-altitude forests in Peru. Together we're doing this! It's been incredible to see how our collective efforts have touched so many lives around the world. To all our amazing donors and partners, thank you!
