IEMA responds to Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) consultation Chloë Wallington Fiddy, IEMA’s Senior Policy and Engagement Lead for Climate Change and Energy sets out a summary of the consultation and how the decisions might land, depending on the actions of the new government. "...the introduction of the CBAM is highly welcomed. It can play a critical part in incentivising the transition to a global low-carbon economy. However, whether it fulfils this ambition will depend upon the detail and design of the mechanism itself. "We urge the new administration to immediately review methods for capturing better data, whilst reviewing default values, and to make it a priority to align the UK CBAM with that of the EU." https://bit.ly/4cMyvTQ

Due to the major IT outages being experienced globally, the IEMA Jobs Board is currently down. We are not aware of any other problems effecting IEMA IT infrastructure. The outage is being caused by a major issue with a widely used third party service which is also effecting organisations globally. We have a team working on this to provide updates and restore services as soon as possible. Apologies to anyone impacted by this problem.

What policy action is still required after the King's Speech? There was much to be optimistic about following the King's Speech but there are some areas that need more detail to take a comprehensive view and areas that need to be addressed in the weeks and months ahead. Ben Goodwin, IEMA’s Director of Policy and Public Affairs, looks at some of the key areas such as Environmental Outcomes Reports (EOR) in regards to planning, goals and targets being delivered through the Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) and more. https://bit.ly/4bLFR8F "If the new government are to continue down the pathway of introducing an EOR approach as part of its planning reform agenda, then these are questions that must be answered early on in its tenure." #KingsSpeech #Government #Environment

IEMA's Deputy CEO Martin Baxter spoke at the East of England Local Government Association 'Net Zero and Climate Resilience Summit' today at Anglia Ruskin University, joining other leading organisations uniting forces to drive progress in the vital areas of #netzero and climate resilience. Martin's workshop focused on 'Green skills: developing capacity and capability for the net zero transition' with discussions around: - what #greenskills and #greenjobs are - the key issues for regional consideration in the transition to net zero - what employers, local governments and training organisations can prioritise within skills development - and much more.

IEMA focus on skills, adaptation and nature-based solutions in CCC report. IEMA welcomes the Climate Change Committee's (CCC) latest report that sets out ten priorities for the new Government to get the UK “back on track” to #netzero. The CCC’s assessment is that only a third of the emissions reductions required to achieve the country’s 2030 target are currently covered by credible plans. IEMA CEO Sarah Mukherjee MBE focuses on three of the ten priority areas in her response to the report: (1) the need for a net zero skills strategy (2) climate adaptation (3) nature-based solutions "IEMA strongly supports the establishment of a cross-government body, like a Green Jobs Council, that can take the lead and deliver the strategy and action plan to rapidly grow the green skills and jobs that are needed across the economy tied to our long-term climate and environmental goals. “And while the primary focus of the CCC is achieving net zero, the twin global crises of climate change and nature need to be tackled together." Energy and housing bills included in the King’s speech The King's Speech took place earlier today to mark the start of the new Parliamentary year. As expected, a Bill aimed at creating 'energy independence' for the UK was included as part of the speech, along with the introduction of several draft Bills relevant to the environment and wider sustainability sector. "The Bill follows the appointment of Chris Stark, the former Head of the Climate Change Committee, to lead the UK's charge towards clean electricity. "Underpinning (highlighted) policies and measures, is of course the need for a green jobs plan to be urgently published. This must set out how the skills and jobs pipeline required to deliver decarbonisation across the economy will be developed." In this short blog Ben Goodwin, IEMA's Director of Policy and Public Affairs, reflects on some of the key announcements: https://bit.ly/4f2RVFr #KingsSpeech #EnvironmentBill #Sustainability
