Inspiring action that’s good for the environment and for everyone 🌱

About us

Hubbub is an award-winning creative charity that inspires action that’s good for the environment and for everyone. Since 2014 we’ve been forming unique collaborations across business and communities, and using behavioural insights, everyday language, and good design to make environmental choices desirable and more possible. Our campaigns meet people where they’re at, focussing on topics people care about that also have a big impact, like the food we eat, clothes we wear, green spaces and our communities. We show the collective power of people coming together to do what they can and use this as evidence to encourage government and business to make it easier for everyone to make greener choices too. So far, we’ve worked with over 2,630 organisations, supported 6,400 people to transform their way of living for the long-term, delivered over 180 campaigns and inspired more than 700,000 behaviour changes in 2023 alone. What this looks like in practice: - Habits for a lifetime: Collaborating with IKEA to create one of the world’s largest customer-facing behaviour change campaigns, Live LAGOM, supporting thousands of households to transform their daily habits, like cutting energy, food waste, buying less and repairing more. Launched in 2016, Live LAGOM continues to be central to IKEA’s strategy for supporting customers. - Championing communities: A thriving network of over 650 Community Fridges that have redistributed 18 million meals worth of surplus food within their communities. Supported by Co-op and Starbucks. - Making waves: A viral cigarette voting ashtray proven to cut litter by 46% and is currently featured across 43 countries worldwide. - Innovating always: £6.8 million invested in trialling new innovations and supporting community groups to replicate and scale proven initiatives. One week to go until Unearthed, our webinar digging into compostable packaging and consumer behaviour!    Think compostable packaging offers all the convenience of conventional single-use with less environmental impact? There’s a bit more to the story...     Join us on 25th July at 2pm, where Rosie Sharp, Hubbub, and Dr Nicola Buckland, The University of Sheffield, will be sharing insights from three trials, exploring how well people can identify and correctly dispose of compostable packaging at home, in the workplace, and in a retailer take-back scheme.    We’ll be discussing improvements for packaging and disposal, plus our recommendations on when compostable packaging should, or shouldn’t, be used.    Find out more and sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eXNJx9jT    #CompostablePackaging #WasteReduction #Webinar #SingleUsePlastic

You (and your laptop) overheating in the office this week? 🥵 Turns out nature gave us a natural air con! Have you figured out how to turn it on?  The world is getting seriously hot. In fact, every month since June 2023 until now has seen the warmest global average on record for that month (NASA, 2024)   Stats making you sweat? Enter nature’s air con - trees. They’re a powerful, affordable, simple, long-term way to help manage extreme weather like heatwaves (and inequalities that come with them).    How?   🌳 They take in and store carbon dioxide  🌳 They provide all important shade  🌳 They can even evaporate water from their leaves to cool the air According to Trees for Cities, trees properly planted around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30%. And they’re not just helpful for heatwaves. Their roots can hold huge amounts of water, which helps reduce flooding risks too. So green spaces (especially in urban locations surrounded by heat-binding glass and concrete!) can help keep everyone cool. For the last few years we’ve been co-creating and funding functional, community-led green spaces across the UK. These spaces offer direct benefits to people who use them, and some ~cool~ indirect benefits to everyone nearby, even if they don't visit 🧊. We have exciting news coming soon about even more green space projects, so sign up for our business newsletter to get the latest updates straight from our CEO, Alex Robinson: https://lnkd.in/eswFvz8W

People pick up their phones an average of 58 times a day... how many are you on so far? 👀 ⏰ In the age of video calls, online banking, shopping, and of course, LinkedIn ✨📱, we can imagine how hard life without a phone would be.  And yet, 1.5 million UK homes are still offline, and 8 million struggle to afford connectivity (OfCom). Community Calling is changing that, one second hand phone at a time. Here’s the difference a phone can make ⬇️

Got a litter issue in your area? 😵 We've got solutions for that ✅ Today we launch our new Neat Streets toolkit, thanks to funding from McDonald's. It’s been designed for local authorities and community groups who work tirelessly to keep our neighbourhoods clean – we like to think of them as ‘bin-thusiasts’. Building on our previous #InTheLoop toolkit for recycling on-the-go, the new site brings together all the best bits from 10 years of experimenting to tackle litter. Grab your (bin)oculars and load up www.neatstreets.org.uk to find: - Free, downloadable campaigns targeted towards specific issues including roadside litter, cigarette butt litter and our #InTheLoop recycling on-the-go campaign. - Advice on how to get the most bang from your bin, and campaign resources, with step-by-step guidance on running a litter campaign. - A collection of over 15 case studies to provide actionable tips and inspire your own campaigns. And that's not all, we have a new grant fund offering £10,000 funding to local authorities who would like to introduce one of the campaigns in their area. The first application round closes 5pm September 13th. Find out more at www.neatstreets.org.uk

If you vote 'Yes', you need to take a long hard look at yourself. 🙄 But if you vote 'No', you're just being sentimental. 🤔 Ballot Bins have been starting conversations (or fights 👀) like this since 2016. • They also help reduce cigarette litter by up to 73%!   • You can find them in 43 countries around the world. • They collect an estimated 𝟭𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝘁𝘀 each year. 🤯 We need to keep cig butts from ending up on the floor because: 🚬 they contain 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 and are non-biodegradable 🚬 they end up in waterways and nature, 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 🚬 they contain 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 that leak into the environment If you want to see one near you, check out the Ballot Bin page. But more importantly, is Gareth number one? ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. These bins don’t just start conversations (or fights👀). They also help reduce cigarette litter by up to 73%!  Can questions change the world? Meet the world’s first voting ashtray, making binning cigarette butts interactive, and tapping into the human instinct to want to participate. A super simple solution, helping change behaviours without even needing to ask – well, other than the question on the bin that is. We need to keep cig butts from ending up on the floor because: 🚬 they contain plastics and are non-biodegradable   🚬 they contain toxic chemicals that leak into the environment  🚬 they end up in waterways and nature, harming wildlife  Now found in 43 countries around the world, and collecting an estimated 15 million butts each year. If you want to see one near you, get in touch.  But in the meantime, we’re curious - what would you vote? React 👍🏽 for Yes or 😂 for No #BallotBin #Cigarette #Vote #Litter #Euros2024

☎️📞🎉 It’s a call-back!  Let’s recall the amazing impact Community Calling has had over the last 4 years... 📱 20,000 second-hand devices have been rehomed since Community Calling launched during lockdown with Virgin Media O2, gifting old smartphones to digitally excluded individuals 📱 We teamed up with charities, community groups and local councils to make sure those who would benefit most got phones and access to digital skills training 📱 Working with Genuine Solutions, we’ve made tech go further by using reclaimed chargers and cables too And what about the impact on those who received the phones? Scroll across to see some of the impact we've had 👇✨ #digitalinclusion #ewaste #reuse #communityproject
