New analysis: One in ten households need to install a heat pump during this Parliament to meet the UK’s climate obligations ➡️ Nesta’s comprehensive plan sets out roadmap for how new Government can decarbonise home heating ➡️ 3 million homes need to install heat pumps or other low-carbon heating during this Parliament   ➡️ If enacted, the plan would save a typical household around £400 per year on energy bills when switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump Home heating is currently responsible for 14% of the UK’s carbon emissions - not far below their 1990s peak. Nesta's new plan sets out how to scale up the energy transition and get the UK back on track for net zero. Read the plan: https://lnkd.in/g_uCTkjH

The UK Government has launched Great British Energy, the new state-owned clean power company ➡️ New analysis from Nesta's Ravi Gurumurthy and Baringa finds GB Energy could reduce costs to consumers by £35 billion by 2050. ➡ Read the report: https://lnkd.in/exF35fvX Ravi Gurumurthy, CEO of Nesta, led an independent policy team to set out options for the design of Great British Energy, which helped to inform Government policy. Analysis found the UK will need £350-500 billion to expand electricity capacity - but renewables investment is held back by red tape. ➡ Report authors Ravi Gurumurthy and Baringa’s Duncan Sinclair will be live in conversation to discuss the role of the state in the GB energy market. Join us to hear more about the analysis and recommendations, 6 August 14:00-15:30. Register to attend: https://lnkd.in/eGr8REPg

    • Image shows quote by Ravi Gurumurthy, Chief Executive of Nesta: “Great British Energy will speed up delivery and reduce the risks faced by the private sector. We estimate this could reduce the time to build an offshore wind farm by 2 to 4 years, and reduce costs to consumers by up to 35 billion pounds by 2050.”

📣 Nesta’s Impact Investments team have announced their investment into clean energy platform Renewabl - an innovative digital platform that allows companies to trace and analyse their clean energy consumption to align with their net-zero targets. With more robust Environmental Social and Governance guidance, businesses increasingly need to validate their clean-energy use. Renewabl’s advanced technology platform addresses this need by enabling businesses to trace renewable energy to its source of generation and trade Renewable Energy Certificates with up-to-hourly precision - using smart algorithms to highlight the most impactful clean energy available. 💬 We’d love to hear from you if you’re a founder innovating to decarbonise households. Heating our houses makes a huge contribution to the UK's carbon footprint. The overwhelming majority of homes use gas boilers. So we'll need to make some big changes over the next 25 years if we're going to switch the whole country over to electric heating and achieve net zero in time. But recent efforts to spark change have been tentative, fragmented and unfocused. Though valuable time has been lost, the new government can seize the initiative and drive through a joined-up systematic approach. By setting the direction of travel, prioritising affordability, focusing on whole neighbourhoods and creating national delivery structures, they can deliver clean heat on time. The task ahead is difficult but achievable - we can't delay it any longer. https://bit.ly/3VT01I4

With free school meals for primary school children now rolled out across Wales, why are 30% of children still opting for packed lunches? With evidence pointing to school meals being nutritionally superior to packed lunches, increasing the uptake of school meals could go some way to tackling obesity. We piloted an opt-out system in six primary schools in Wales this year, aimed at increasing the uptake of free school meals: 📈 An opt-out scheme like School Meals, Count Me In Month has the potential to increase school meal uptake 🍎 The benefits of the scheme extend beyond saving time and money, with parents saying it reduced stress and encouraged children to try new foods 🏫 Social norming and school expectations play a big role in driving positive impact. The insights from this pilot lay a promising foundation for future healthy lifestyle initiatives to combat childhood obesity - but more needs to be done to create a joined-up approach and sustain uptake. The threads of power and place run through everything we are exploring in our UK 2040 Options project. Understanding how power and place interact, and how they impact people and communities, is critical to understanding how we might make the UK a fairer place to live. A new guest blog by Grace Duffy and Mila Lukic from the Bridges Outcomes Partnerships explores new models of power and place to do just that. https://bit.ly/3WwIWW4
