This week we held our first #TasteOfCricket event at Holyport Cricket Club 🥘🍴🏏 It was a wonderful celebration of food, community, inclusivity and cricket, showing the power of the cricket and food to unite communities together. Special thanks to England Men’s player, Josh Tongue, and England Men’s Deaf Team player, James O’Connor, for popping in to share a special match tea with the club and play some cricket with the kids. They also stayed to watch some exiting matches from the club’s disability, women and girls', walking cricket and men’s teams! Stay tuned for more #TasteOfCricket match teas this summer, supported by Remitly, as part of our continued efforts to Raise the Game! Two years ago cricket wasn’t on the agenda for children at Hawthorn Primary School, an inner city state school in Newcastle upon Tyne. But since then, pupils have been getting free coaching funded by the ECB and delivered by Chance to Shine NORTHUMBERLAND CRICKET BOARD LIMITED as part of our increased investment in state school cricket - and the impact has been remarkable. England Men’s Test Captain Ben Stokes visited the school to see for himself how much the children are enjoying it, and the benefits the teachers are seeing. Head teacher Jane Dube writes here about the impact she’s seen: https://lnkd.in/ei-4aKcH This year, working with Chance To Shine, we’re delivering free cricket in more than 4,300 state schools. Many of them are in underserved areas, in schools like Hawthorn where more than 40% of children are eligible for free school meals. In the next five years we aim to reach millions more children so they too can experience the benefits which cricket brings.

Quality Sport and PE in schools isn't just important for children's health, it teaches so many valuable life skills as well. Today England Men's Test Captain Ben Stokes visited Hawthorn Primary School in inner city Newcastle, a state school where cricket wasn't played until 2 years ago. Now children benefit from free sessions funded by the ECB and delivered by Chance to Shine and NORTHUMBERLAND CRICKET BOARD LIMITED. It was clear today how much the children enjoy the sessions, and teachers have noticed positive benefits in the classroom as well. This is why it's so important that politicians ensure there's a minimum two hours' quality PE or sport in school each week as part of the National Curriculum.
Inspiring the next generation of leaders ❤️ Today England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) captain Ben Stokes joined us at Hawthorn Primary in the centre of Newcastle, a school that has fully embraced cricket through the Chance to Shine programme and our partners at Northumberland County Cricket Board. Last year 60% of the 4,357 schools we worked in had a higher than average number of pupils eligible for free school meals. Statistically we know these children are less likely to be active and often lack access to facilities outside of school. What we also know is when given the chance, these children can fall in love with the game of cricket. This is so much more than just a bat and ball; the confidence, resilience, leadership and life skills that pupils pick up from our programme is proven. Ben's visit gave them a small glimpse at where those vital traits can take you in life. We echo the calls for the government elected at the general election to guarantee every child at least two hours of physical education in schools each week. #inspiring #leadership #schools #sport

A year on from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket report, ECB Chair Richard Thompson reflects on the steps we've taken towards addressing discrimination and making cricket a more inclusive sport, and the work that's still left to do. Lasting, meaningful change is not a quick fix. It will take time, and we will continue to listen and learn along the way. https://lnkd.in/egevZJCy

There are so many amazing people who devote themselves to helping others enjoy cricket. The Marylebone Cricket Club Community Cricket Heroes campaign is a great way to recognise the volunteers who go above and beyond, the coaches who inspire, the grassroots players who overcome adversity. Find out how to nominate your heroes below
⭐️ Calling all Community Cricket Heroes ⭐️ MCC has today launched its Community Cricket Heroes campaign for 2024 to find 11 unsung cricketing heroes from across the country. The campaign, which is now in its second year and run in partnership with The Cricketer magazine, saw 11 heroes of grassroots cricket welcomed to Lord’s last June for a day of the England v Ireland Men’s Test match, watching on from the prestigious President’s Suite. Last year’s winners included Lachlan Smith, the founder of Birmingham Unicorns, one of the world’s only LGBTQ+ cricket clubs; Taj Butt, a groundsman from Bradford who has driven girls cricket participation and used cricket to support the education of young people in his local community and Sheena Recaldin, who helped save her local village cricket club in Kent following the Covid pandemic. Another one of last year’s winners, James Worstead, from Sussex, who helped develop a cricket club for refugees in Northern France, said of his experience: “It was my first ever trip to Lord’s, a place I never thought I would visit. To have come for the first time in those circumstances made it all the more surreal and it was an absolute privilege.” This year, another XI MCC Community Cricket Heroes will be chosen from the nominations by a special panel consisting of Arfan Akram, Mike Gatting, Dr Sarah Fane, and one of last year’s winners, Lachlan Smith. The panel will be chaired by former England international and MCC Chair of Cricket, Claire Taylor. Nominate yours now 👉 lords.org/heroes #Community #Grassroots #Volunteers #Sports
