It's been fascinating in recent weeks working with LCP colleagues looking at the Football Governance Bill - and in supporting Fair Game UK in setting out their position on the Owners’ and Directors’ Test (OADT), in particular on the financial aspects. The Bill needs to ensure there are fit and proper people running football clubs, and the financial sustainability both of individual clubs and of the pyramid. ⚽ Along with Ashley Mould from LCP's Sport Analytics team, and John Parnis England and Jonathan Wolff from our Financial Analysis team, we have provided input on the financial sustainability aspects of the OADT through Stephen Radley for the Fair Game UK Position Paper published today: https://lnkd.in/ebANQXpy ⚽ I also enjoyed taking part in a Fair Game UK podcast, along with Fair Game CEO Niall Couper, journalist Graham Miller, and human rights expert Nicholas McGeehan on the subject, also released today. https://lnkd.in/ejVFDAPC From a financial sustainability viewpoint, we believe that key issues for the new Independent Football Regulator, when considering the business plans of owners, should include: 💷 not just their willingness and ability to cover losses, but also whether there is an enforceable legal obligation for them to do so; and 💷 this should cover any projected losses under the ongoing business plan, and also crucially allow for potential additional losses in realistic downside scenarios, like relegation. Without this, clubs will continue to be at risk of wealthy owners buying clubs and investing for success on the pitch. but then withdrawing financial support if and when that success fails to materialise #oadt #footballgovernance #fairgameuk

Released today, in this episode of EdTech Unwrapped, is the conversation myself and Mary Lloyd had with Rob Key, Managing Director of the English Cricket Board (ECB) had in January. The ECB has faced some similar challenges to Higher Education, including needing to diversify income streams, having new external threats and overcoming a risk-averse mindset to achieve transformational change. In the episode, Rob talks about implementing an identity and cultural change while being authentic, as well as how tech can save time, while I answer the question on the current state of higher education and the need to benchmark from beyond the sector and overcome the resistance to change. #EdTech #HigherEducation #Universities #Cricket

Interesting stats about how people operate their cars…wonder how many of us also operate ourselves this way?! Great to see FSU sport psych professor Dave Eccles’ research on the importance of rest for high performance featured in this Time article. https://lnkd.in/eKV-4ix4

The education act 2002 prohibits the Secretary of State from stipulating any amount of time to be given to any subject. However, there are several recent government documents that recommend 2 hours of PE each week. For instance, the childhood and obesity action plan and the physical activity and sport action plan. Lots of schools do offer two hours of curriculum time PE, but timetabled time and the amount of time in physical education are two different things. Our research shows that out of an hour timetabled lesson, children only spend an average of 35 minutes in the working area (Powell et al., 2018), Ofsted cited this research in their recent research review for PE. More worryingly, out of this 35 mins in the working area, research repeatedly evidences that on average children are only engaged in 40% active learning time (Fairclough and Stratton, 2006, Hollis et al., 2016, Powell et al., 2018). So out of two hours curriculum time PE lessons, research indicates that children are only engaged in active learning for 28 mins, the rest of the time children spend getting changed, waiting in queues for their turn, listening to teachers talk. Let’s focus on HQ PE in those two hours not just two hours on the timetable!

This is a great piece of work from FutureDotNow on the gaps in digital skills per sector. Over 21 million (yes million) people cannot complete all 20 tasks that industry and government agree are essential for work. https://lnkd.in/eK9fkXf2 The top 4 missing tasks across the UK workforce are: 1. Improve my own and/or organisation productivity using digital tools (E.g. Trello, Microsoft Projects and Planner, Stack) - 31% can't complete 2. Set Privacy and marketing settings for websites and my accounts (e.g. managing social media privacy settings, managing cookie settings, updating contact preferences) - 24% can't complete 3. Access salary and tax information digitally (e.g. password protected payslips, P60, P45) - 22% can't complete 4. Set up and manage account on a professional online network/community/job site (LinkedIn, Total Jobs, Indeed) - 22% All of these skills are covered in digital skills - why not get a demo of our Essential Digital Skills or Digital Functional Skills initial assessment that will identify these gaps and providing learning resources for your staff and learners. Assessments on average last around 15mins, no more than a coffee break, and can help you support your team and increase productivity. To book a demo is easy just fill in the form on the below link and let NCFE do the rest. https://lnkd.in/eEit-RSt #digitalskills #digital #essentialdigitalskills #digitalfunctionalskills

As a leader within a company, your management style is so important. The way you lead your team will shape how they learn and follow them even if they leave their role. There are two ways of teaching someone to ride a bike: You can coddle them and hold on whilst they’re learning Or you can show them how to do it and let them learn for themselves. That’s how I like to think about managing a team member. Too many people think that trust has to be earned. I like to show my team that I trust them because that’s the only way they’ll ever learn.

I'm thrilled to share my latest project: The Cobh Ramblers FC Website Development! This extensive project aimed to create a more engaging and user-friendly online experience for both fans and players. Here's a breakdown of the key improvements: Enhanced Fan Experience: Streamlined FAQ pages for easy access to information. Live match updates & videos, results, and schedules on the front page. Match highlights – a unique feature not seen on many club websites. Downloadable content and upload for club merchandise sections where fans can design their own kits. Improved SEO visibility with optimized content and sticky posts. Empowering Youth & Player Development: - Developed individual player profiles with photos and achievements. - Increased online presence & discoverability for players (U14 team). - Membership portal for parents to manage subscriptions and view orders. - Streamlined payment processing with Stripe, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. - Implemention of WooCommerce subscriptions for recurring billing and admin panels for those who signed up. - Players are now indexed on Google, with player profiles for senior and youth age groups, adding photos of their achievements and video link goals in matches, creating web pages of their own with in-depth statistics. And much much more... This project has already seen a significant increase in club shop sales and online revenue stream, the brand identity and awareness and further supporting the fantastic academy initiative by Paul Deasy A huge thanks to: Mark Farrell at Caltech Electrical Supplies for their unwavering sponsorship and trust. It's a Pleasure working with good people with fantastic knowledge, a great way to learn and see a system that brings on-going and lasting impression we hope to keep building on and make one of the best sports websites there is. RYT Media my team for their creative genius and dedication. Together, we've helped Cobh Ramblers FC reach new heights online, giving players, sponsors, and fans the recognition they deserve! Be sure to check out the website, lot's of other things left out and to be done, but the systems are their. And so is the time, class, and dedication. cobhramblers.ie #website #business #developmentcompany #club #leagueofireland

Meet Ally Hamilton - Head of Academy Science and Conditioning at Middlesbrough FC. With a rich background that includes managing a team of physical performance coaches and a successful tenure at Hull City Academy, Ally's journey is a testament to his dedication to personal development. Ally's quest for professional development led him to Collaborate Sports, where he's been invested in his growth with us for the last 2 years, via multiple forms of mentorship. Each experience has honed his expertise and expanded his skill set. Reflecting on his mentorship journey, Ally shares; "I have completed the S&C, Soft Skills mentorships and am currently enrolled on the rehab simplified pathway. Each of the LIVE and interactive pathways has been hugely beneficial, catalysing my growth, and offering a structured approach to skill enhancement and problem-solving." The mentorship pathways have provided Ally with invaluable insights and principles that have revolutionised his approach to programming decisions, unlocking new levels of effectiveness in his role. In Ally's words; "The S&C and rehab pathways have been centred around core principles. This has been a key theme and has helped organise my thinking and decision-making in practice." The real-world application of knowledge gained through mentorship has been evident in Ally's work. They havve influenced his strategic decisions and resource creation processes, from updating academy development development plans, to refining supporting documents for systems and processes. Ally emphasises the impact of mentorship on his professional growth, stating; "I think enrolling on the first mentorship program kick-started a desire to develop as a practitioner once again following a couple of years where my personal development had probably stalled slightly." As Ally continues to evolve through mentorship, he recognises the importance of paying it forward and becoming a mentor to others. “The whole process has enhanced my ability to guide others towards effective solutions, and improve my leadership skills too." When asked about recommending mentorship to fellow practitioners, Ally's advice is clear: "Do it! I wish I had done it sooner in my career. The opportunity to learn from someone who has previously solved similar problems that I am faced with daily has been really valuable.” Ally's journey exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship in fostering growth, enhancing skills, and building a strong network of support within the sports science and conditioning community. It's been a privilege personally to support Ally through this whole process. If you'd like to know more about our pathways with expert mentors in the field of high performance, comment "mentorship" and I'll send you a personal message. #strengthandconditoning #mentorship Dr Andy McDonald Spencer Goggin Rob Anderson Shaun McLaren

Just published - The Video Assistant Referee in Football. We focused on the growing literature and work around VAR to look at what we know and what we still need to understand about VAR. There is overwhelming support for VAR, particularly with decision makers and administrators, evidenced by its broad adoption, but we also know there are criticisms and concerns. As such, we looked at the use of the technology, why VAR is perceived as controversial, and its perception in a socio-cultural context. The review shows the positive perception of referees towards VAR, highlighting improved decision accuracy and minimal match disruption. Fans and media express trust in VAR, but call for refinements. Concerns about in-stadium communication with spectators suggest a need for enhanced decision making transparency. VAR isn't going anywhere and is now integral to football. It is shaping the elite officiating landscape. As such, we need to consider how it can be improved, what further training and development is required and how it can best serve the game.
