Recipient of the 2023 Research Oscars (DeMontfort University, Leicester) || AI Governance and Tech Policy Research || Ethical AI, Women Empowerment and the Impact on Africa

I had a great time speaking and presenting at the Data for Policy CIC 2024 conference which held at Imperial College London. It was exciting being on the 'AI, Ethics and Policy Governance in Africa' panel, with Samuel Segun, PhD, Connor Wright, and Amara Esther Chimakonam. The session was co-chaired by the amazingly brilliant Rachel Adams, and my paper was on 'Digital Colonialism, Artificial Intelligence, and the Implications for Africa’s Future Development'. The paper will be published in the coming weeks by Data for Policy CIC, in collaboration with Cambridge University Press . It was also an honour to be selected among distinguished thought leaders, policy makers and researchers, as part of the 'Understanding, Facilitating, and Connecting AI and Data Science Futures in Sub-Saharan Africa' strategic working group at the Data Science Institute, Imperial College London; with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Special thanks to the organisers and the entire data for policy team for successfully driving a cross cultural collaboration among the presenters and the attendees. #techpolicy #research #DataforPolicy2024 #africa

🚀 My Takeaways from the Data for Policy Conference 2024 🚀 This week I had the pleasure of attending the Data for Policy CIC Conference at Imperial College London. It was an eye-opening experience that provided many new insights into how AI can foster trustworthy decision-making and governance. Some of the themes that I will take away (only scratching the surface of the incredible research and work in this field) include: 💡 AI as a Means, Not an End: AI should be seen as a tool to enhance and augment human capacity and decision-making, not to replace the processes and systems we already have in place. We should consider what the priority use cases and impact of using AI are and use accordingly. 🌍 Ethical Frameworks for AI: There's an ongoing challenge in defining accuracy, fairness, and transparency in AI systems. Ethical considerations must guide the use of AI, ensuring it serves humanity's best interests, considers national and regional nuances and respects individual rights. 🤖 Implementing AI: AI-driven solutions can revolutionise service delivery and public innovation. However, implementation often struggles due to lack of skills, data availability, and privacy concerns. Promoting transparency, sharing best practices, and standardising approaches are crucial steps forward. 🌐 Cross-sectoral collaboration: AI Governance needs voices from all fields! Collaboration between policymakers, corporates, technologists, ethicists, and the public is key to creating inclusive, effective AI solutions and governance. What other key themes do you think are important for the future of AI in policy? #AI #DataForPolicy2024 #EthicalAI #DigitalTransformation #Governance #Innovation #DataPrivacy #AIGovernance #AIRegulation #FutureOfAI #PublicSector #ResponsibleAI

🤔 Key Takeaways from last week's Data for Policy Conference 2024 🌐 The Data for Policy Conference 2024 delivered insightful discussions on the pivotal role of data in advancing #AI technologies for #governance. Here are some of my high-level takeaways : 🔍 Data is Key for AI: The conference underscored the critical role of data in advancing AI technologies for governance purposes. Without systematic and responsible access to data for re-use, the progress of AI could be significantly hampered, leading to what we are now calling a "data winter"—a period where the lack of accessible and integrated data stifles innovation and growth. Moreover, the quality of data is paramount. Therefore, there's a growing emphasis on data governance frameworks that ensure data integrity, and minimize biases. 🚰 Invest in Plumbing to Heat the Data Winter: To harness AI, we need first robust data infrastructures and standards. Investing in data "plumbing" ensures that the vast amounts of data generated are accessible, high-quality, and usable, thus driving innovation and efficient AI deployment. 🤝 In addition to technical infrastructure, the human element of ensuring data access and re-use cannot be overlooked. Training and empowering data stewards to manage and interpret data effectively is critical. These new professionals are essential to ensuring that the data is accessible in a systematic, sustainable, and responsible way and that the data reused in AI applications is relevant, accurate, and timely. 📜 Updating Data Governance Principles: AI's rapid evolution is pushing us to revisit and update data governance principles. Ensuring equitable data practices coupled with digital self-determination is critical for building trustworthy AI systems. This includes addressing biases, enhancing participatory frameworks, and fostering a culture of responsible data use. 🧠 From Decision Support to Decision Intelligence: AI can significantly support decision-making processes, but there's a need to rethink how decisions are made. Embracing decision intelligence involves integrating advanced analytics and AI, coupled with collective intelligence and lived experience, into decision workflows, moving from merely supporting decisions to fundamentally transforming them with new practices and professions. 📏 New Metrics for Good Governance: With AI's growing influence, establishing new metrics for good governance is essential. These metrics should focus on inclusivity, transparency, and accountability, ensuring that AI-driven decisions are fair and beneficial for all stakeholders. This requires ongoing dialogue and collaboration across sectors to define and implement these standards effectively. These takeaways provide just a glimpse into the rich discussions at the conference. Data governance was among the key issues intensively discussed at the Data for Policy CIC 2024 Conference. Our paper, presented by Dr. Mushan Jin, examined what kinds of themes are focused on in research on data governance by conducting bibliometric and text analyses. https://lnkd.in/gy2cJUph

"You know when you've found your community!" What an impressive atmosphere at the Data for Policy CIC conference at Imperial College London! The complexity of global challenges is visibly increasing... But so is the potential of our technologies! And precisely because we do not know exactly where AI will lead us as a (global) community, we now have the opportunity and responsibility to shape this technology participatively and transparently. If we hesitate, others will set the rules... I was most inspired by A. Aldo Faisals keynote: Human and machine interaction in the health sector can provide a solid foundation for trustworthy AI concepts in other decision-making processes, even if they are sensitive. In the end, it is the interdisciplinary collaboration of many that creates technical solutions serving both people and society. Why? Because today's problems are too complex to be solved manually by just a few... So, as a progressive society, we need more data and AI competence in the public sector! The resilience of a society is more dependent than ever on the digital capabilities of its institutions. Kudos to the organizers and speakers for a profound and multifaceted exchange filled with passion and commitment! Zeynep Engin, PhD Rossella Arcucci Mark Kennedy Jon Crowcroft Stefaan Verhulst, PhD ... and many many others. #data4policy #ai4good #digitalTransformation #publicSector #justDoIt #datalab
