Congratulations to Churchill Fellow Nicole Devlin for successfully piloting the Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM) programme at Banbridge High School, a significant step in violence prevention education in Northern Ireland. Learn more about the impact of the pilot programme below 👇
I am delighted to share that Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM) has been successfully piloted in Banbridge High School, Northern Ireland. Last year I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship which took me to the United States to learn more about Futures Without Violence and their approaches to violence prevention. Visiting four cities in the US, including being hosted by Futures in San Francisco, Heal 901 in Memphis, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape and UPMC, Carnegie Mellon University, I had the opportunity to understand how CBIM was developed, delivered, and implemented. I was able to take away key points regarding implementation in different cultures and how to apply these differences to the Northern Ireland’s context. This programme is a crucial initiative for Northern Ireland, given its alarming distinction of having the highest rate of femicide in Europe. As documented in my Churchill report, the programme meets a number of objectives in prevention and education, which is in alignment with Northern Ireland’s Strategic Framework on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG). The impact of this pilot programme has been captured in this compelling 10-minute video, showcasing both school staff and pupils from Year 9 to Year 12. Pilot Lead for Banbridge High School, Mark Parker, explained, “Many of our students aren’t having these conversations within their own home environment - particularly around some of the sensitive areas to do with sexualised language and consent.” I want to express my gratitude to everyone involved in this process. Firstly, Rome wasn’t built in a day! Through collective efforts and championing the need for this type of programme to be invested in Northern Ireland, without meeting and networking with a number of likeminded individuals and thinkers, this would not have been possible. I would like to start by thanking WomenEd who invited me to speak at their Unconference last September in Ulster University and welcoming me into their network. It was through here I met teachers, stakeholders, and inspirational women from across education, policy, and leadership. To Nicole O'Connor and Emma McCaugherty who have been my lifesavers throughout the process of documenting the evaluations with their creative talents and abilities. I am genuinely so grateful to you both! I want to thank Banbridge High School, in particular, Mark Parker, Head of PE who was so enthusiastic throughout this process. To the impressive 55 students, you are role models! These young men deserve so much respect. Finally, the need is evidently there, and I appeal to the NI Executive and policymakers to consider this unique, evidence based programme, which has demonstrated transformative effects and made a difference to both students and staff in one school alone here in Northern Ireland.
