About us
BPI promotes recorded music in the UK & worldwide and champions the rights and interests of over 500 record labels and associate members, including independents across the UK and Universal Music UK, Sony Music Entertainment UK and Warner Music UK. BPI membership accounts for around 85 per cent of the recorded music consumed in the UK – the world’s third largest music market – while in 2018 British artists claimed one in every eight albums sold around the world. BPI’s Content Protection work and portal helps to protect its members’ recorded music content whilst its Research Department publishes BPI’s annual Music Market yearbook and monthly market reports as a leading source of authoritative industry data. BPI further supports its members with free training courses to ensure they are up-to-date with changing industry trends. To promote British music overseas, BPI works with DIT and other partners to organise a series of international trade missions, providing members with the opportunity to break into new markets and grow their business. BPI also administers the Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS), which to date has distributed over £4.6m in support of around 300 UK music projects, generating £55.5 million in exports revenue for the British music economy. BPI owns and organises the annual BRIT Awards, with substantial proceeds going to the BRIT Trust, BPI’s charitable arm that has donated over £16m to education-related causes, including the world-famous BRIT School, Nordoff Robbins and War Child. BPI works with and supports a wide range of community-focused initiatives and organisations, including The BIG Music Project, and Creative Access, which promotes diversity across the industry. The BPI is now also home to The Mercury Prize, while it co-owns the Official Charts with the retailers’ association ERA. BPI administers the iconic Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards Programme, which certifies recordings as they achieve various milestones.

BPI's Co-Head of Content Protection, Niki Haywood for The Guardian: “Intellectual property crime is a huge black hole for the UK, sucking in some £13bn from the legal economy, and making it the second only to drugs as the most profitable form of criminality. What people don’t always realise is that IP crime often goes hand in hand, and funds, other forms of criminality, so its impact is even more destructive. This last year alone, our own BPI work tackling counterfeit music has unfortunately also uncovered child protection abuses, illicit firearms trading, money laundering and drug racketeering. Since 2020, the value of seizures from BPI-led physical investigations is £36m, underlining quite how much funding is lost by musicians and artists to piracy.” Read the full article: https://bit.ly/3LBurcW

Today, UK Music Ltd has published new research into the value of gigs, concerts and festivals to local economies, revealing that a total of 19.2 million music fans travelled from UK towns and cities and overseas to see shows and festivals in the UK in 2023. Dr Jo Twist OBE (she/her), CEO of BPI: "This welcome news shows that the UK continues to be a global centre for live music, with live gigs, concerts and festivals bringing huge value to the British economy. While there are challenges, particularly for smaller venues, it's particularly exciting to see significant growth in music tourism in the South West and North East, which is testament to the vibrant music ecosystems and incredible talent all across the UK. We have an exciting opportunity to work together, in the industry and with government, to boost creative skills and education and give opportunity to talent from all parts of the UK. This is why it's so important that all parts of the music sector, including under-threat grassroots venues, are enabled to perform their vital role in supporting artists’ careers." In association with BPI, Official Charts is celebrating 10 years since streaming was added into the UK’s Official Chart. In July 2014, the first Official Singles Chart based on something other than pure sales was published – marking the coming of age of the new and rapidly-evolving era of music consumption that was streaming. Dr Jo Twist OBE (she/her), BPI Chief Executive: “Streaming has transformed how music is discovered and enjoyed by fans and has enabled many more artists to thrive with the support of their labels in building their careers and connecting with audiences at home and around the world. Such has been its remarkable impact, success for artists is now measured in the hundreds of millions and even billions of streams annually – last year alone well over 200 saw their songs streamed over 100m times in the UK.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/dNmKzVQf

BPI Chief Executive Dr Jo Twist OBE (she/her) for Music Week: "Ever since sales of vinyl LPs started rising again more than 15 years ago, the compact disc has been in the shadow of the older physical format, so it’s heartening to see that, after years of significant declines, the CD market is potentially on the up again. Thanks to record labels, music fans now have more choice than ever to enjoy releases by their favourite artists, from the mass-market penetration of streaming to an array of physical formats which have a complementary relationship to streaming and help to reinforce the special bond that exists between creator and consumer.” Read the full story in Music Week: https://lnkd.in/ePB2ckhf

The new Secretary of State for Department for Business and Trade (Jonathan Reynolds MP) is calling on business owners to provide feedback to help outline his vision for economic growth. - How should the Government use its Industrial Strategy to kickstart Britain’s economy? - How have you supported your teams while also growing your business so the Government can take forward the best examples to inform its work? - What’s stopping you growing if you’re a small business owner? - How should the Government use its trade strategy to drive up exports and sell more British-designed, British-made products and services to markets around the world? We encourage all our members to contribute, to ensure we can continue to engage fans around the globe and grow British music exports. BPI will also be responding. You can contribute by sharing your answers to the questions above with TellJonathan@BusinessandTrade.gov.uk.
"We can’t do this alone. We must work with business every step of the way. It’s why I’m asking some questions of business owners to help shape our approach." Read more about our Secretary of State's meeting with businesses 👇
