  • Laura Webber, our Transport Manager, shall be embarking on a 36-hour endurance run, aiming for 20, 5-mile laps around Newnham Park in Plympton. Laura will be setting off on Friday 12th July, at 9pm and all going to plan she will cross the finish line, at 9am on Sunday 14th July. Last year, Laura completed 88 miles, but had to retire due to injury sustained on the course. This year, she will be aiming to reach her 100-mile target! The endurance challenge will be raising money, and awareness for men’s mental health group, ‘Every Man Matters’ in Plymouth. They provide a safe place for men to speak openly about life struggles of all descriptions, get advice and support from other men, and encouragement to speak up. Laura says “I have had my own struggles in the past, but have managed to receive medical help, however, my very special friend wasn’t so lucky.  Jake took his own life at Christmas 2020, only a few weeks after he turned 37. He couldn’t face living with his chronic mental illness any longer, after being failed by the system, and he simply saw no other way out. He is very much my motivation for raising money for Every Man Matters, so that other men in the same position, don’t feel they need to follow in Jakes footsteps.” https://lnkd.in/dj9dQHE5

  • Truro SPAR shop employee wins national award!   Alan Dunstan has seen off competition from across the UK and Ireland to win a top award from one of Europe’s biggest employers’ associations.   The Fed (Federation of Independent Retailers) is a not-for-profit organisation with more than 10,000 members throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Nominated by store owner Judith Smitham, Alan, who is manager of The Old Dairy - Pydar Stores in Truro, Cornwall was named Employee of the Year at the exclusive 2024 Fed Awards. Alan was presented the award by the Tom Crawley, a director of News Team which sponsored the category. The judges said: “Alan is an inspirational employee whose dedication and attitude cannot be questioned. Starting as a 15 year old, he has learnt everything about the business. Customers know they can approach him for help and he really is an ideal employee. Every store should have an Alan.” Alan is so dedicated to his role that he often has to be reminded to go home at the end of the shift. He plays a key role in the day to day running of the store, which includes stock control and HR, as well as keeping on top of new legislation and food standards. The glittering ceremony was hosted by renowned impressionist, comedian and satirist Rory Bremner at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham on June 18.   Award winner Alan said: “I feel privileged. I did not think that I would win it. It’s amazing. I would have never guessed I would have won this.”   When Alan was announced as the winner on social media, his store commented: “So proud of Alan. He has been with us since he was 15 and was 34 on Monday. On Sunday, he was bitten by a shoplifter and spent the first few hours of his birthday in A&E.”

Daughter of Matt Billing, Director of Fresh Trading at Appleby Westward, Penny was born 10 weeks early in 2014. She and her family received exceptional care from the Neonatal Unit in Guernsey which is supported by the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation (PPBF). PPBF fund lifesaving equipment, such as incubators for babies born too early and too sick. They also own a house in Southampton for families to stay in when their children are receiving lifesaving care at Southampton General Hospital. Penny has only ever had 2 haircuts in 9 years (one done by her Mummy in lockdown!) Penny’s hair is her pride and joy, her comfort. Her long, thick, beautiful hair characterises Penny. She is being very brave and wants to have a significant amount chopped off to raise money for the charity who cared for her and her family when she was born. Penny’s hair measures 93cm in length!!
