Gru and his minions have set off the fireworks at the box office this 4th of July.
Universal and Illumination’s latest animated film, opened to a strong $27 million on Wednesday, state box office reports on Variety. This impressive opening is a boost for movie theatres, which have seen a resurgence with other major releases.
'Inside Out 2', 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die', and 'A Quiet Place: Day One' have all attracted significant audiences in recent weeks.
'Inside Out 2' earned $7.1 million on Wednesday, pushing its North America domestic gross to $496.5 million, and is expected to surpass the $500 million mark by Thursday, making it the third highest-grossing animated film domestically.

'A Quiet Place: Day One' added $4.4 million, bringing its U.S. total to $68.6 million, while 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' collected $1.2 million, raising its domestic earnings to $169.1 million.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner’s epic Western 'Horizon: An American Saga' grossed $1.1 million. Despite its financial struggles, the film has earned $14.8 million in its first week. Costner, who produced, co-wrote, and stars in the film, partially self-financed the multi-part production. Despite its poor reception, a second installment is set to release in August, with filming on a third chapter in the making.

The 'Despicable Me' franchise has become a staple of the Fourth of July box office. The 2022 spinoff, 'Minions: The Rise of Gru', broke records with a $123 million debut over the holiday weekend. Previous entries, including 2017’s 'Despicable Me 3' which earned $99 million on its debut weekend, 2013’s 'Despicable Me 2' which raked in $83.5 million, and 2010’s 'Despicable Me' which earned $56 million, was also launched during the holiday period.
Directed by series veteran Chris Renaud and co-directed by Patrick Delage, 'Despicable Me 4' features an all-star voice cast including Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Sofía Vergara, and Stephen Colbert.
