Nilgiris election results: DMK's A Raja secures victory in Nilgiris Lok Sabha constituency

NEW DELHI: DMK's A Raja emerged victorious in Nilgiris constituency with 4,73,212 votes and a margin of 2,40,585 votes. The runner up, BJP's Dr Murugan polled in 2,32,627 votes.
The Nilgiris is one of the 39 parliamentary constituencies of Tamil Nadu and is reserved for SC candidate. It comprises six legislative assembly constituencies: Bhavani Sagar (SC), Udhagamandalam, Gudalur (SC), Coonoor, Mettupalayam, and Avinashi (SC).

According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 735,394, with around 24% belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC), approximately 7% each of Muslims and Christians, and 2.59% being Scheduled Tribes (ST).Nilgiris constituency has a literacy rate of 74.32%.
In the 2019 elections, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate A Raja emerged victorious, securing 5,47,832 votes. M. Thiyagarajan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was the runner-up with 342,009 votes. The total voter turnout for this constituency was 74.01%.
In the 2014 elections, AIADMK candidate C Gopalakrishnan won this seat with 4,63,700 votes. DMK candidate A Raja came second with 3,58,760 votes. The total vote polled for this constituency was 73.55%.
