Shillong: Meghalaya unseated both its sitting Lok Sabha members by overwhelmingly voting for change in both the Lok Sabha constituencies of Shillong and Tura.
While Ricky Andrew J Syngkon of the newly floated Voice of the People Party (VPP) trounced three-time MP Vincent Pala of the Congress in the Shillong parliamentary constituency, Saleng Sangma of Congress ousted Agatha Sangma of the National People’s Party (NPP), who too was seeking re-election for the fourth consecutive term from the Tura parliamentary seat.
VPP’s Ricky AJ Syngkon defeated his nearest rival, Vincent Pala of the Congress, by a margin of 3,71,910 votes and Saleng Sangma of the Congress won over his rival NPP candidate Agatha Sangma by a margin of over 1,55,241 votes.
In the Shillong LS constituency, victorious VPP candidate Ricky Syngkon, who is an assistant professor, polled 5,71,078 votes against Vincent Pala of the Congress who polled 1,99,168 votes while NPP candidate Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh polled 1,86,488 votes followed by United Democratic Party candidate Robertjune Kharjahrin garnering 44, 563 votes. Independent candidates Lakhon Kma polled 18,582 votes and Peter Shallam 7024.
In the Tura parliamentary constituency, Congress candidate Saleng Sangma, who is a three-time member of the Meghalaya legislative assembly and sitting MLA from Gambegre assembly constituency, polled 3,83,919 votes and his nearest rival Agatha Sangma polled 2,28,678 votes.
In the four-cornered contest for the Tura seat, former Meghalaya sports minister Zenith Sangma of Trinamool Congress polled 48,709 votes. An independent candidate Labenn Ch Marak polled 6, 910 votes.
Interestingly, None Of The Above (NOTA) has created a new record in this Lok Sabha election results in the state by registering 11,008 votes in the Shillong parliamentary constituency and 5,840 votes in the Tura seat.
Addressing the media after winning, both Ricky Syngkon and Saleng Sangma pledged to work for the people and raise issues concerning the state in the Parliament.
