Tura (ST) Lok Sabha election results 2024: Congress' Saleng Sangma wins Tura seat in Meghalaya

NEW DELHI: The Congress party made a significant victory in Meghalaya by winning the Tura Lok Sabha seat from the National People's Party (NPP) as reported by the Election Commission.
The Congress candidate Saleng A Sangma emerged victorious by defeating the NPP MP Agatha K Sangma with a considerable margin of 1,55,241 votes. Securing 3,83,919 votes, Saleng A Sangma left behind Agatha K Sangma, who received 2,28,678 votes.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Zenith M Sangma occupied the third position with 48,709 votes.

Agatha K Sangma, the incumbent MP and sister of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, is the head of her party, which is part of the BJP-led NDA.
CM Sangma graciously accepted the defeat and congratulated the Congress winner, expressing respect for the people's choice.
Voting for this constituency took place in the first phase on April 19, 2024. Tura holds strategic importance in the political landscape of Meghalaya. The constituency, known for its diverse demographic composition, is one of the two Lok Sabha constituencies in the state, making it a focal point for political activities and electoral dynamics.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, key candidates in Tura include Saleng A Sangma from the Indian National Congress (INC) and Agatha Kongkal Sangma from the National People's Party (NPP). Other candidates include Zenith M Sangma from All India Trinamool Congress(AITC) and Labenn Chh Marekk(Independent).
Tura's electoral history reveals the dominance of the NPP and INC in past elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Agatha K. Sangma of the NPP emerged victorious with a significant margin over Dr. Mukul Sangma of the INC, securing 42% of the total votes cast.

In 2014, Purno Agitok Sangma of the NPP secured victory with 239,239 votes. The runner-up, Daryl William Ch Momin, trailed behind by a margin of 39,671 votes.
