Guwahati: Assam govt has urged the people who were forced to flee the recent unrest in
Manipur’s Jiribam district and seek refuge in Cachar in the state to consider returning to their places of residence, as and when the situation improves.
The civil and police authorities of both districts met at Jirighat in Cachar district on Monday and held a joint interaction with the displaced.
Speaking to the media, DC (Cachar) Rohan Kumar Jha said, “In today’s meeting with the Jiribam district authority, we have deliberated on the importance of maintaining peace in the region. The situation in Jiribam has been gradually stabilising, and we have discussed the implementation of confidence-building measures.”
“Those who have sought refuge in Cachar following the violence, we urge them to return to their homes, assuring them of our commitment to providing comprehensive security,” he added. He said the district administration has received directives to conduct a house-to-house survey in the border areas and has urged its Jiribam counterpart for assistance and cooperation.
About 900 people from Jiribam have taken refuge in Cachar since July 6 when fresh violence broke out there.
