Heavy rainfall on Saturday caused the Sukhi River to overflow in Haridwar, leading to submerged roads and vehicles being swept away by the floodwaters. Bystanders and locals recorded videos of drowning videos, some of which have gone viral on social media. In one such video doing the rounds on the internet, a Hyundai Venue, a Mahindra Brezza, and a Toyota Innova Crysta can be seen being carried away by the powerful currents.

In the background, bystanders can be heard shouting in alarm as the vehicles are tossed by the relentless water. In fact, a group of local divers can also be seen rushing towards a white SUV but to no avail.

As the water level of the Ganga River continues to rise amid heavy rainfall, Uttarakhand authorities have advised people to avoid bathing in the river. Typically, locals park their cars on the dry Sukhi riverbed, which joins the Ganga mainstream just a short distance away from the town.

The Uttarakhand Police posted on X has informed that no lives were lost in the incident. They also urged residents to use designated parking lots instead of the dry riverbed in Kharkari.

Are flood damages covered by car insurance?

For those concerned about the insurance coverages, flood damage to vehicles is only covered under comprehensive insurance policies. This type of coverage, while optional and not mandatory like third-party insurance, protects against damages caused by natural calamities such as floods, earthquakes, and cyclones. Car owners without
comprehensive coverage may not receive compensation for flood-related damages.
However, it is important to remember that if your car is retrieved, do not try to start the engine. Doing so can cause further damage, and your insurer may refuse to cover the repairs.
