We just launched the world’s largest standalone public opinion survey on #ClimateChange. Covering 77 countries and representing 87% of the world’s population, the #PeoplesClimateVote 2024 explores a world of views on the climate crisis. People were asked how they are being affected by the impacts of climate change, and what actions they want their leaders to take. The survey found that an overwhelming 8️⃣0️⃣% of people around the world want their country to take stronger #ClimateAction. With critical climate thresholds dangerously close, the people have asked for stronger commitments from their government, including a quick transition away from fossil fuels, international collaboration on climate and many other key climate policies. Check out the results below to see what climate action people want to see from their country and learn more at: https://lnkd.in/e9xWsBkP

"Somalia is a nation of poets, and this is what truly inspired me. The Somali people have long used poetry and storytelling as a way to preserve their history and convey their values. It is a tradition that has endured through times of war, displacement and conflict." Meet Zahra Abdihagi, an emerging Somali poet and a storyteller. She leads a team of 30 young Somali storytellers who were trained in digital skills with the support of UNDP Somalia to generate powerful stories about peace, reconciliation and development initiatives in their communities. She and her team represent the new generation who have found meaning and are passionate about reviving the rich oral traditions of their culture, long buried under the rubble of inter-clan conflict. And with digital tools, the ancient Somali art gets a touch of modernity. Read her story: https://go.undp.org/4oU

Sustainability-themed bonds are growing in popularity, including among development practitioners who view them as promising instruments in the delivery of more, especially climate, finance in developing economies. Our latest Development Futures Working Paper provides an overview of the thematic bonds market and a discussion of issuer incentives as well as some of the main challenges related to additionality and credibility. To improve the potential of thematic bonds as a tool for sustainable and equitable development, the paper proposes 5 features that any official sector-supported model should prioritize. These features aim to deliver substantially lower funding costs for ‘green activities’ and improve market access as well as the credibility of bonds, which include strengthening issuer commitments to ambitious targets and incentives to implement climate-friendly policies. This is the biggest election year in history where 3.7 billion people will have the opportunity to go to the polls and vote. This means that a record number of parliamentarians will enter office around the world, and with the right support, they have the power to ensure that digitalization processes will be a driver, rather than a hindrance, in achieving solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time. See how we support parliaments to advance digitalization as a tool for connecting people and government - and drive progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: https://lnkd.in/ewewAWwC

For decades, #Afghanistan was the world's leading illicit opium producer, accounting for 70% of global output. Fast forward to 2022, when a ban by the Afghan de facto authorities slashed poppy cultivation by more than 92%. However, the solving of one problem can be the genesis of another. The opium economy ran deep within the nation’s fabric, creating a cycle of instability and underdevelopment that saw annual revenue from the poppy economy plummet, from $1.3 billion in 2022 to $110 million in 2023. Behind these figures are local farmers – by some estimates nearly 600,000 of them – who have been plunged into poverty from the loss of one of Afghanistan’s few sustained sources of income. Given the opium trade's cross-sectoral influence on the Afghan economy, a decline in production affects other industries like agriculture, manufacturing, and services. What can be done? Replacing the massive poppy industry is no small feat and requires substantial investment in alternative livelihoods and drought-resistant agriculture. With approximately $90 million in funding from the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, we are incentivizing thousands of former poppy cultivators to switch to high-value horticultural crops. While promising, long-term success hinges on continued international support and alternative private sector opportunities.
