Additive manufacturing (AM) has been a gamechanger, disrupting traditional manufacturing methods by allowing rapid prototyping of parts and products. To better position Singapore as a hub for AM, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC Singapore) was launched in 2015 as a national platform hosted by A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, to assist our startups and SMEs to leverage AM technologies, help larger enterprises to deepen their AM capabilities, and support our students and researchers hoping to commercialise cutting edge AM technologies to spin-off companies. I was delighted to visit NAMIC and had insightful conversations with industry representatives that have embraced AM as a key technology driver in their business models. They shared their perspectives on how they have used AM to create novel products that have the potential to transform their industry sectors. Singapore needs to develop our capabilities and build a skilled talent pool well versed in AM. As AM technology improves and finds new applications in many sectors, Singapore will need to ride this AM wave to ensure that we stay ahead as a high tech, innovation-driven hub.
