Such is the world of high tech manufacturing, and where, if it was indeed Apple which cancelled the contract, just shows who is king of the hill.

'While Singapore and Malaysia are the only South-east Asian countries where semiconductor foundries produce wafers, from which chips are carved out, downstream processors such as assembly, test and packaging (ATP) companies are spread across the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam as well. The investments – whether they are in greenfield projects or in expansions of existing capacity – have also reinforced Singapore’s strength in several segments of the chip industry. They are trailing-edge logic chips, leading-edge memory chips, semiconductor materials, chipmaking equipment and tools, and ATP.' ---- 'Singapore accounts for one-fifth of the global semiconductor equipment market and supplies 11 per cent of chips worldwide. It is also one of the top producers of cutting-edge memory chips, which are used in tech devices such as smartphones for general storage and transfer of data. Meanwhile, Malaysia commands a 7 per cent share of the global chips market. It also recently secured a US$5.5 billion commitment from Germany’s Infineon to build its third foundry, which will make power chips used in electric vehicles. Although behind Singapore in chips sales, Malaysia has South-east Asia’s largest ATP ecosystem, which is set to grow in the coming years. Singapore has the 2nd highest robot density per employee in the world. Some of the automation is in manufacturing and logistics, but we also have a lot of service robots to augment our workforce. Singapore is also making moves to secure a slice of the growing global robotics market, which is estimated to grow beyond S$60 billion by 2028. The S$60 million investment into the National Robotics Programme (NRP), which I chair with Fred Chew, CEO of A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, aims to advance R&D 🔬 and promote robust industry collaborations for eventual research commercialisation 🤝. It will also catalyse the further adoption of robotics across key sectors like manufacturing, healthcare and logistics, while nurturing a skilled talent pool ready to drive and sustain these technological advances. Very good article by Juin Yee Seoow of Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报 in Singapore on the development and future prospects of the Malaysian semiconductor industry, with a particular focus on Penang. There are a handful of centres of semiconductor manufacturing, assembly, testing and packaging in Southeast Asia, of which Penang is a huge provider of test and packaging capacity for businesses such as Intel Corporation, Infineon Technologies and Bosch. With announcements to come from the governments of Singapore and Malaysia on the Johor Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) in the coming weeks, we should expect to see policies directed at attracting more such investment. https://lnkd.in/guexA299

🚀 Exciting Insights from GDIN's CEO! 🚀 In a recent interview with Money Today, JongKap Kim, CEO of Global Digital Innovation Network, highlighted significant shifts in the paradigm of international exports and expansions due to the advanced digitalization of technology. https://lnkd.in/eBd9PkSg Kim emphasized that in the past, localizing IT products meant merely changing UI, design, and colors for local users. However, today's landscape demands at least a year-long collaboration to gather local data and train AI models. "Digital technology advancement is reshaping the landscape of international exports and expansions," remarked Kim. He further explained that while traditional methods involved setting up overseas offices, understanding local laws, and meeting buyers in person, the process has now evolved. Companies can now handle exports by downloading apps or subscribing to SaaS, eliminating the need for physical presence. Kim stressed the importance of focusing on local target marketing to find potential customers. He recommended establishing joint ventures with local startups as the most efficient method. With experience in establishing 26 joint ventures worldwide and over 60 partnerships, GDIN is well-positioned to leverage this strategy. He suggested that instead of setting up physical offices and sending staff abroad, partnering with established local businesses could facilitate market penetration and continuous technological updates through AI learning. So if you are around in Singapore at the end of the month come along to the IEEE Conference on AI. I'll be publishing my first paper in quite a while, this one on the application of #GenAI to consumer networking and specifically the creation of #IPv6 ILAs as a way to provision flat networks against which devices and services are authenticated, removing the need for 'pyramid' based networks and continual reauthentication and reducing multidomain security problems. The paper is titled "Using Generative AI to drive Person Centric Networking". The theory behind the paper is that you can now use GenAI to dynamically create the device and service to network configuration in a way that makes it accessible to consumers, meaning that the networking provisioning challenge moves up a layer of abstraction and simplifies the challenge for end-users. Rather than authenticating Netflix on every device, you authenticate Netflix to your network and then provision devices, sometimes temporarily, to that network. Only with GenAI can we simplify this challenge from the deeply technical to the human available. 🔔 AI Semiconductor Series 4 🔔 The AI chip race is heating up in Asia, with four promising startups making waves. While each startup has its unique strengths, they are all focused on optimizing for deep learning (DL), machine learning (ML), and large language models (LLMs). HyperAccel is developing an innovative semiconductor processor called the "Latency Processing Unit" (LPU). Hailo recently unveiled Hailo-8, a specialized deep learning processor that accelerates inference on edge devices. EXARION has created semiconductors tailored for 3D audio and video AI systems. Meanwhile, Axera Tech, a Chinese startup, is working towards a future where AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) are integrated into all devices and objects we use daily. What caught my eye this week is the latest developments in the AI PC revolution showcased at the annual COMPUTEX TAIPEI conference. The gathering is a must for all the major chip players - NVIDIA, Intel Corporation, AMD, Qualcomm, Arm - and everyone of their CEOs had the opportunity to present their own AI PC narrative. One thing is clear, the expectations for accelerated demand for such devices are getting bigger by the day. ℹ According to a recent report from Morgan Stanley, titled "AI PCs Will Lead the Next Phase of Growth in the PC Market", AI PCs will occupy 64% of the market share by 2028 (16% in 2025, 28% in 2026 and 48% in 2027). ℹ But what is an AI PC?!? In a nutshell such devices (notebooks/ desktops) are: ✅ Embedded with specialised silicon ✅ Able to run AI applications (digital assistants and software) ✅ Able to generate everything from code to videos on the device itself (do not rely on cloud services) ℹ But why AI PCs future seems bright? ✅ Such devices never stop learning ✅ The embedded personal foundation models make them uniquely yours (and your privacy is safeguarded) ✅ The possession of a dynamic knowledge base that adapts to you is key ✅ They are designed for natural and intuitive interactions The CEO of Intel Corporation, Pat Gelsinger, was quite explicit in his speech - "When I think about the PC market, this is the most exciting moment in 25 years since the arrival of WiFi.” ❓ Will this latest phase of the AI revolution hype live up to its expectations and lead to an increased productivity by combining hardware and software into a revolutionary tool? #DisruptiveTech Eye to the future: A team of engineers and roboticists at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has developed an electronic compound eye design to give robots the ability to swarm efficiently and inexpensively. In their paper published in the journal Science Robotics, the group describes the inspiration for the design and how well it worked when tested in a flying robot. Most robot eyes are based on the standard camera concept—images are captured using a lens that allows for high-resolution processing. But this approach is expensive. For that reason, roboticists seek to build robots with compound eyes, similar to those found in many insects. Compound eyes, as the name suggests, have multiple small lenses covering a hemisphere—in insects, the images are stitched together in the brain, allowing the insect to see. Doing the same with electronic eyes has proven to be a formidable task because of the problem of affixing flat lenses onto a curved surface. PENANG WELCOMES A NEW MEMBER TO THEIR SEMICON ECOSYSTEM The latest addition is Cohu, Inc., ranked #3 globally in the automatic semicon test equipment market. The World Economic Forum has already acknowledged Penang as a Semicon Powerhouse with over 350 multinational companies already here, with more coming. In the opening of their Asia Design Center in Penang, they were welcomed by YB Gobind Singh Deo who explained at his opening speech, that the newly formed Ministry of Digital is responsible for coordinating all digital infrastructure in the country, which includes cybersecurity and the talent pipeline. Semicon test capabilities are fundamental and critical to the semicon industry. 7% of the world’s semiconductor market comes from Malaysia. And every chip needs to be tested and confirmed flawless before it can be shipped. ICs are now more complex.  Products like advanced displays and autonomous EVs demand ICs that operate at higher speeds and higher precision. Every new car today has digital displays - which are getting bigger - which also needs to be tested at high temperatures during manufacturing. Your car electronics need to survive and operate in the hot midday sun! Cohu’s new Asia Design Centre will be designing the next generation of air-cooled automated test equipment for chips that will be four times faster with four times the memory density! That means shorter testing times, more accurate, and higher throughput for the factories using Cohu ATE testers. Cohu Malaysia already has the world’s largest semicon test and inspection handler factory in Melaka with 800 people there.  They are the only one producing the test handler for the automotive industry with best-in-class active thermal control.  This means very fast and accurate high temperature cycling during testing, which is critical for the EV industry. They are working with MIMOS, the nation’s applied R&D entity, and other local partners to develop these high-precision and high signal fidelity testing with timing to the picosecond and microvolt level accuracies. This is real hard-core engineering at its finest.  Being done in Penang. With almost 600 researchers and staff, MIMOS Berhad is already involved in many fields – IC design, medical devices, advanced materials, RF technology, big data analytics, and machine learning – that’s in addition to fab services and failure analysis for the semicon industry. More recently, MIMOS has been the government’s go-to advisor in Artificial Intelligence, National Digital-ID, and in supporting the National Semiconductor Strategy. Soon, the leading air-cooled automated test system will get an upgrade with contributions from Malaysian talent. A warm welcome to the Cohu team, Luis Muller, Jeff Jones, Wai-Kong Chen.
