“I have known Dr. Chaw Sing Ho for a long time. Dr. Ho was my department director, and also my career coach and mentor. He is one of the few rare leaders with great management skills, long-term vision and deep technical expertise. As one of the youngest directors in HP, Dr. Ho managed a large global organization comprising of several hundred managers, engineers, technicians, and operators spanning inkjet supply chain and manufacturing operations as well as product development. Under his vision and leadership, we had successfully completed several critical technology transfers, product development and advanced technology developments. All these could not have been achieved without his strong leadership and management. Dr. Ho is a very hands-on leader, and engages actively with the engineers on technology discussions. He has an open-door policy and engages in regular 1:1s, which stimulates, inspires, and spurs us to think things from a different perspective. Several ideas leading to technical disclosures and patents were generated through these discussions. One of the more memorable incident was related to a long-standing issue which had stalled an NPI development. Possessing deep insights on semiconductor process and material science, Dr. Ho worked with me and a few of my colleagues to develop a physics-based explanation. By establishing the root cause, the issue was resolved with a simple and elegant solution. A dozen of technical disclosures were filed, and many of these are now implemented in HP inkjet products. In 2011, I decided to pursue a Ph.D. degree. Dr. Ho encouraged me to step out my comfort zone and work on a new class of semiconductor memory device as the thesis topic. Under his encouragement and sponsorship, I relocated to HP Labs in Palo Alto, CA. In all honesty, the journey has been far from easy. I spent numerous late nights working overtime in the labs while being separated from my family. However, those transitional years in HP labs helped push and elevate me to what I am today. The people and environment benefited me tremendously and led me to publish several papers and invention disclosures. Today, Dr. Ho has taken his skills to the public sector, but his deep and broad connections with R&D and the technical community makes him extremely valuable to the research community and industry. He has demonstrated how a strong innovation culture can be cultivated in a corporate environment. Dr. Ho is well respected by his peers and subordinates, and highly regarded by leaders in the company. I will always be grateful for his vision, encouragement and trust. ”
