The Biden administration on Friday finalized a rule that would allow more than 100,000 young immigrants protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to receive federally run healthcare coverage for the first time.
Launched in 2012, DACA protects eligible immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, allowing them to study and work without fear of deportation.
According to the new rule, DACA recipients will be eligible to apply for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces starting in November when the Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment period for 2025 health insurance plans begins.
The new rule doesn’t extend to Medicaid, a healthcare program jointly funded by the federal government and states for poor and disabled Americans.
