Far-right and #populist #parties have gained mass support around the world in the last decade, while #polarization increased in democratic societies. What explains this shift away from the consensus liberalism and centrism of the 1990s and the early 2000s? Our expert Mike Runey turns to International IDEA's #PerceptionsofDemocracy (PODS) survey for responses on what motivates voters of major conservative parties and what differentiates them from other voters or non-voters. The survey looks at whether and how personal values, beliefs about government and the sense of being ‘worse off’ economically than the preceding generation shape citizens’ perception of #democracy. See his blog ‘Populist parties and their voters’ for a closer look at the drivers of polarization and populism and how to overcome them: ⬇️ https://bit.ly/3Wpbbod

The popular will of the Venezuelan people, expressed in Sunday’s #election, must be respected. Venezuelans have the right to total transparency of the vote count. In the meantime, the Venezuelan government must guarantee the right of its citizens to peaceful assembly and protest. This is the time to stand united with the democratic resolve of the people of #Venezuela. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dRBGrwyz

Uganda’s anti-homosexuality act (#AHA) which President Museveni signed in May 2023, is one of the world’s harshest anti-LGBTQIA+ laws. It criminalizes consensual same-sex conduct with penalties up to life imprisonment and even the death penalty in cases of 'aggravated homosexuality'. The AHA makes #LGBTQIA+ people prone to even more stigma, discrimination, and violence, undermining #politicalequality and #democracy. International IDEA’s expert Heidi Park looks at the impact this law has on democracy in #Uganda. She highlights the pressures for and against the law from outside actors. See her #DemocracyTracker blog on ‘The colonial legacy of homophobia’ and more data and analysis on #democracy in Uganda: ⬇️ https://bit.ly/UGprofil

#Mongolia's electoral reforms have significantly transformed the political landscape, ushering a record number of women into Parliament. This change follows the May 2023 constitutional amendment, which expanded parliamentary seats from 76 to 126 and introduced a mandatory 30 per cent candidate quota for women. As a result, the number of female MPs has increased dramatically, from 13 to 32. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/geitbAmP

International IDEA condemns the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and we wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts go out to all the victims of the shooting at the Pennsylvania rally. Across the world democracies are being challenged by political violence and polarisation, often fed by lies and disinformation. This attack is a reminder of how crucial civility in politics is to the protection of free and fair elections. https://lnkd.in/dGPJjhTp
