🙌 In 2023, we supported the creation of Regard Citoyen, a civil society-led electoral observation mission for DR Congo’s December elections. This initiative brought together four Congolese civil society organizations, all dedicated to ensuring transparent and peaceful elections 🗳️ in the country. Time to take stock! 🧐 In May, we convened our civil society partners, donors, and institutions in a workshop to examine the mission’s successes and ways of improving our electoral observation in DR Congo. 🗣️ "I've seen how the machine has been set up, and I'm delighted with the choice of partners because the work done has been remarkable. It would be important for us to see how we can improve on what has not worked for the next elections," said the EU’s ambassador to DRC, Nicolas Berlanga, during the workshop. ✅ What worked: ➡ The co-creation of training modules and observation tools with key players. ➡ The alternative spokesperson from the four platforms. ➡ A digital system that enabled instantaneous data feedback. 📝 Feedback we received: ➡ There is a need for more regular evaluation sessions. Info
Democracy Reporting International is a not-for-profit organisation based in Berlin, free of any political, religious, partisan, or national affiliation. We are both a think tank, seeking solutions to complex political transitions, and a project partner to national decision makers and citizens who want to drive change in their countries. We focus on key policy areas where the state is accountable to its citizens: constitutions, elections, and parliaments. We work closely with civil society, which has a unique mandate to provide the nexus between the state and organised public interests. We target our analysis and support at key junctures in legislative and political processes, when we can make a difference. Our vision is a world of informed citizens who use their power to elect governments, who are involved in politics, who insist that governments serve their interests, and who act in the defence of open, accountable, and representative democracy - a world of citizens, not subjects.

Rincón: https://bit.ly/3WlalZF These impersonation and dubious "fan accounts" mislead voters and distort political perceptions, undermining TikTok's service integrity. They pose a systemic risk by: 📉 Misleading users, including voters 🗳️ Distorting perceptions of party and candidate support 🚫 Bypassing TikTok's restrictive policies on political accounts Our recommendations to TikTok & VLOPs: 🛡️ Update policies to prevent fan account abuse 🔍 Implement features to detect impersonation ✅ Mandate verified badges for all EU political accounts 🗒️ Conduct pre-election reviews to address inauthentic accounts 📏 Ensure consistent enforcement of guidelines The European Commission must also issue a request for information (Art. 67 DSA) to TikTok to evaluate the effectiveness of their policies against impersonation and inauthentic fan accounts of political figures.
