The Arctic, with its chilling winds, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgiving conditions, stands as more than just a testament to natural beauty. It also serves as a battleground in the global fight against climate change. It is home to six of the sixteen Global Tipping Points—thresholds that, when crossed, trigger irreversible and far-reaching consequences for both humanity and the environment. We are honored to join forces with the Ocean Science Expedition to illuminate these critical planetary boundaries. This journey, unlike any other, will cross the frigid waters from Norway to Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and Alaska, venturing through the legendary Northwest Passage ⚓ "Abel Tasman", a 75-ft steel-hulled Bermuda Schooner, set sail last week. This yacht has a rich history of voyages around the world and has hosted renowned guests such as professor Johan Rockström and oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. Aboard, a diverse crew of experts awaits, including acclaimed filmmakers, sound designers, divers, and passionate climate scientists. Led by Expedition Leader Keith Tuffley, they embark on a mission to capture the richness of Arctic biodiversity and understand the connections between climate change and human activity. A big thank you to everyone who joined us at Fotografiska to celebrate the launch of the Houdini Planetary Boundaries Assessment 2024, in collaboration with Albaeco 🌿 Johan Rockström, Director of the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Professor of Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam, and a leading figure in shaping this framework, kicked off the event with a stark analysis of our planet's current condition. He explained how "business as usual" threatens the environmental conditions that have supported human development and prosperity for the past 10,000 years, and emphasized that six out of nine planetary boundaries have been breached. We were deeply moved by Johan Rockström's words "Houdini is iconic, being the one company globally integrating the planetary boundaries framework, a comprehensive earth system approach, right at the core of its business model." Malva Carlsson, our very own Regeneration Lead, and Marika Haeggman from Albaeco shared insights from the 2024 impact report. They discussed comparable results from the previous assessment and outlined future strategies, including Houdini’s open-source philosophy. They also pointed out that business within planetary boundaries is not only possible, it's a great opportunity. In the summer of 2023 we joined an incredible group of adventurers, thought leaders, change makers and storytellers for a week of exploration on Abel-Tasman, a 75-ft steel-hulled Bermuda Schooner along the coastline of Lofoten. In the company of world renown ocean scientist Dr Sylvia Earle and earth system scientist Professor Johan Rockström an odd band of advocates, entrepreneurs, investors, students, filmmakers, photographers and writers, discussed everything ocean, from the urgency to protect it to the immense beauty of life that lies below the surface. We left Lofoten with a renewed sense of hope. There is relentless work being done for ocean conservation and the regeneration of ocean eco systems. Humankind holds the capacity to change course and with collaborative action we can make it happen. The Lofoten Hope Initiative was born. Tomorrow marks an exciting chapter as the Abel-Tasman continues the legacy of the Lofoten Hope Initiative. A partially new crew will embark on the Ocean Science Expedition, sailing the Northwest Passage from Norway to Alaska, researching Arctic tipping points and sharing their insights with the world. In 2015, we initiated the groundbreaking Planetary Boundaries Assessment, a holistic corporate evaluation based on the Planetary Boundaries framework.
