[Cosmic Fountain Is Polluting Intergalactic Space With 50 Million Suns' Worth of Material] Tremendous explosions in a galaxy close to the Milky Way are pouring material equivalent to around 50 million suns into its surroundings. Astronomers mapped this galactic pollution event in high resolution, obtaining important hints about how the space between galaxies becomes filled with chemical elements that eventually become the building blocks of new stars. The findings came about when the international team studied NGC 4383, a spiral galaxy in the Coma Berenices constellation, using a Very Large Telescope (VLT) instrument called the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). Located around 62 million light-years from Earth, NGC 4383 is part of the Virgo Cluster and is undergoing a strange and turbulent evolution. This includes the galaxy spitting out an outflow of gas so great it stretches across 20,000 light-years of space. This gas jet, containing enormous amounts of hydrogen and heavier elements is traveling at speeds as great as 671,000 miles per hour. For context, that is around 450 times as fast as the top speed of a Lockheed Martin F-16 jet fighter. Watts explained that in the outflow of gas from NGC 4383, he and the team detected oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and many other chemical elements. These outflows are, in short, vitally important to the evolution of the cosmos. The elements they blast into intergalactic space will become the building blocks of the next generation of stars, planets, moons — and possibly even the foundation of living things that will someday come to dwell on those worlds. The team thinks the tremendous outflow of gas from this relatively close galaxy is the result of powerful stellar explosions at the heart of NGC 4383. That's because this region is in the throes of an intense burst of star formation. The most massive stars created in this bout of starburst are losing mass over their lifetimes via powerful stellar winds. After millions of years, stars like these die in violent supernova explosions. Both stellar winds and supernova explosions drag out a galaxy's gas and dust, therefore depleting its gas reservoir. Because this reservoir provides the building blocks for new stars, that depletion has the effect of slowing — and eventually, stopping — star formation in galaxies that experience this phenomenon. In the VLT/MUSE image of the galactic fountains of NGC 4383, this outflow of material can be seen as bright red filaments shooting from the main, central body of the galaxy. The team's findings represent the first results from the MUSE and ALMA Unveiling the Virgo Environment (MAUVE) survey. The team's research was published April 22 in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Source: https://lnkd.in/dSnbZ49M #galaxyaerosgh #space #spaceexploration #spacenews

The Microfibre Consortium
What is the ‘life cycle’ of a microfibre? 🤔 This is a key question Dimitri Deheyn, Research Scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography explores in his research. In a seminar for TMC Signatories, Deheyn shared insights from all corners of the world on the production and dispersal of natural and synthetic microfibres.🌍 Key learnings: -Microfibres in the air are transported and dispersed by weather cycles. 🌧️ -Microfibres are ubiquitous and made with diverse materials and additives, making standard unifying statements challenging.👕 -Additives and finishes can plasticize ‘natural’ microfibres, inhibiting biodegradation.⚠️ #microfibre #microfiber #textiles #pollution #research

Conservation Canines assist rangers with snare detection efforts The success of a pilot project and proof of concept to determine whether anti-poaching dogs can be used for snare detection may be a new technique of combating poaching. Thanks to funding from the Taronga Zoological Society in Sydney, Australia, the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Canine Conservation unit spent several days this month testing novel techniques to detect snares in a farming and conservation area in Limpopo. Two EWT tracking canines, Ruger and Kisha, were specifically trained in order to field test this idea. Using a combination of tracking and article detection training, the dogs would first track the human scent trail left by poachers, and then indicate on scent pools left by poachers as they set snares in a specific area, as well as any articles (including snares) which carry the same scent. In order to prove the concept, two assistants mimicked poaching behavior and set snare lines in the field, walking through the veld and setting snares as poachers would realistically do. The canines and handler team would then set off, tracking the scent left by the assistants. When the dog indicated on a scent pool, and the snares the two accompanying rangers would search that immediate area. The same area was then searched by two rangers without the assistance of canines, enabling direct comparison of the results. The trial was repeated several times across different terrain including hard/rocky surfaces, sandy river beds and dense bush. In all cases, the dogs successfully tracked the scent of the person who had planted the snares and other items, finding 70-100% of the snares placed in each case, compared to the 10%-20% of snares located b ranger teams without a dog. As further proof that this technique works, the dogs were taken on a routine patrol on a neigbouring farm that has problems with poachers using snares to trap wildlife. During this patrol, Ruger discovered a snare that had been planted by a real-life poacher. Judging by slash marks in the surrounding vegetation, the snare was estimated to be between 2 and 4 days old. While there is a lot more work that needs to be done, this is proof that the concept works – an extra tool in the arsenal to combat poaching. #ConservationCanines #AntiPoaching #WildlifeProtection #EndangeredWildlifeTrust #ProtectingWildlife #Poachers

Mysterious Hanny's Voorwerp, Dutch for "Hanny's Object", is really enormous, about the size of the Milky Way Galaxy and glowing strongly in the greenish light produced by ionized oxygen atoms. It is thought to be a tidal tail of material left by an ancient galaxy merger, illuminated and ionized by the outburst of a quasar inhabiting the center of distant spiral galaxy IC 2497. Its exciting 2007 discovery by Dutch schoolteacher Hanny van Arkel while participating online in the Galaxy Zoo project has since inspired a search and discovery of eight more eerie green cosmic features. Imaged in these panels by the Hubble Space Telescope, all eight appear near galaxies with energetic cores. Far outside their associated galaxies, these objects are also likely echoes of quasar activity, illuminated only as light from a core quasar outburst reaches them and ultimately fading tens of thousands of years after the quasar outburst itself has faded away. Of course a galaxy merger like the impending merger of our own Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy, could also trigger the birth of a quasar that would illuminate our distant future version of Hanny's Voorwerp. Will microplastics become a serious health issue? Plastic has been shaping our world for decades. However, the focus on plastics has shifted towards "microplastics" in recent years. These small fragments are slowly degrading and pose a threat not only to the environment and animal life but also to our own health. The increasing concern regarding microplastics will undoubtedly have an impact on the life sciences industry. Like sonar pulsing through the deep ocean, a muffled message keeps reaching my ears, each wave saying that seaweed and algae are the future of sustainable fashion. There are seaweed fibers, algae shoe soles, seaweed packaging, algae ink, and even entire couture outfits made from sheets of seaweed. This conversation has been going on for more than a decade. And whenever I see reams of articles breathlessly talking up the revolutionary potential of a material, I want to dive in (pun intended) and examine one by one whether the actual products live up to the hype. https://lnkd.in/eY2-Vjiz

The United Kingdom has developed its first rules to guide research using human embryo models. Scientists say they are pleased the country has clarified its position on the fast-moving field. The voluntary code of practice, published today, prohibits researchers from implanting embryo models made from human stem cells into the uterus of a living person or other animal. But it does not set fixed time limits on how long models can be grown in the laboratory, as some other countries have proposed. Instead, the code requires that projects propose their own limits on the basis of the minimum time needed to achieve their scientific objectives, and that an oversight committee be established to review and approve projects. #medicine #health #science #biology #people #humans #doctor #nurses #birth #doctors #physicians #research #hospitals #legal #law

At #Circularity24 a couple of weeks, there were several panels on environmentally friendly materials made of everything from seaweed (Sway Keel Labs) to “leather” made from the skins of invasive fish (INVERSA Leathers). But when it comes to marine answers for a better planet, deep sea mining could undo everything, and more. •Less than 500 of the thousands of species down there are known. • The only long range study of deep seabed disturbance shows zero improvement after 26 years • licenses have been issued with NO standards in place • the metals may not be needed given new developments in battery tech. It make NO SENSE to enable and Energy Transition with a significant of trashing the planet. #energy #deepseamining #marinehealth #mining Chicago Climate Connect https://lnkd.in/gWRDT-X5
