Intersectionality

Abstract

How do we understand the relationship between identity and power relations? Historically, the experiences of minoritized groups largely ignored how multiple identities played a role in shaping their lived experiences. Intersectionality advocates for the interrogation of multiple identities within systems of domination to understand how privilege and oppression are created and perpetuated. In this entry I discuss the foundations of intersectional thinking, focusing on race as essential to the understanding of how identity and lived experiences result in positions of privilege and subordination, and interrogating how the intersection of multiple identities interplays with modalities of power and domination. This entry provides an overview of the richness that an intersectional approach can bring to gender and management scholarship, providing avenues for methodological and critical analytical engagement.
