Stage Preview

Val-de-Marne, the largest of the three departments next to Paris, is a harmonious blend of urbanised areas a stone's throw away from the capital and natural spaces. It is known as the "water department", with no fewer than 37 towns and cities found next to bodies of water! On Sunday 21 July, the Olympic torch will begin its tour of the department at Orly, France's second-busiest airport that will see millions of supporters during the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The torch will then cover the first leg between Ormesson-sur-Marne, where it will visit its château, and Champigny-sur-Marne.

From there, it will go to Rungis, famed for its international market where professionals from France and Europe come to trade. It will set a course for Vincennes and its famous château and keep on going until Maisons-Alfort. After a stop in Boissy-Saint-Léger, it will advance from Villejuif to Vitry-sur-Seine to bring the celebration to the masses. Créteil, the last city on the daily itinerary, will have the honour of wrapping up this incredible stage.

Sunday's relay on 21 July will draw to a close in Créteil, a young and dynamic city at a major crossroads. The torch will get going near the Val-de-Marne prefecture, where it will blaze past the Esplanade des Abymes, a site known for its water jets. It will then highlight the vibrant sports scene of the city, which boasts over 16,000 licensed athletes and 80 clubs. For example, the torch will pay a visit to the Maison du Handball: a unique, performance-oriented site housing all the trophies won by the French national handball teams. From there, the torch will hop next door to the Dominique Duvauchelle Stadium, which will host the end-of-day celebrations in the presence of a massive crowd.
