1. General Objectives
To mark World Desertification and Drought Day 2024 by highlighting the complex interlinkages between land degradation, desertification, drought exacerbated by climate change and increasing conflicts, migration with dire impacts on the population and biodiversity in the Sahel and dry lands.
2. Specific Objectives
To promote awareness and understanding of the link between land degradation, climate change, and security risks in the Sahel and Africa's Dry Lands.
To showcase activities undertaken by the Sahel Commission, LGA, the Great Green Wall Initiative, and the UNDP Stabilization Programme in addressing climate change and enhancing security.
To discuss the role of sustainable land management and restoration in fostering climate peace and security.
To provide a platform for partners to share their interventions and experiences in the Sahel and Dry Lands of Africa.
To foster collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders for improved land management and climate adaptation strategies.
To underscore the significance of collective efforts in combating desertification and mitigating the impacts of drought.
Expected Outcomes
Increased awareness of the challenges and solutions related to desertification and drought in the Sahel and Dry Lands
Showcase the projects undertaken by partners to curb desertification, droughts and their impacts on adjacent communities and biodiversity
Enhanced understanding of the connection between sustainable land management, climate adaptation, and security.
Strengthened partnerships and collaborative efforts among the AU, Member States, regional organizations, and development partners
