In #Lusaka, poverty and urbanization have created large informal settlements that offer an ideal market for #charcoal sellers. But regions in Zambia with biodiversity hotspots are facing irreversible environmental damage as their trees are being cut and burned to make that charcoal. The Zambian Governance Foundation has found creative ways of working with communities to find alternatives. Find out more 👇🏾 https://lnkd.in/erPxSxtm

Working since 1968 to achieve just, inclusive and life-sustaining societies
Over ons
Mission: Hivos works for a world where people can realize their full potential, unleashing their ingenuity and creativity to build fair, just and life-sustaining societies for themselves and generations to come. Our mission is to amplify and connect voices that promote social and environmental justice and challenge power imbalances. We particularly empower marginalized rightsholders to raise their voice and demand freedom of choice. Hivos supports the development of alternative solutions to deep-seated problems so that individuals and communities can make responsible and equitable choices within political and economic systems that serve their needs and preserve the planet. We connect people and organizations offering alternatives to those looking for solutions in their fight for social and environmental justice. Vision: Hivos firmly believes in every person’s right to live in freedom and dignity, to enjoy equal opportunities, and to influence decisions made regarding the changes they want to see in their lives, communities and country. We envision a world in which individual differences and backgrounds are respected and used to strengthen communities. A world in which people join forces to challenge the power imbalances that allow environmental degradation and propel climate change; that condone exploitation, oppression and exclusion; and that perpetuate gender inequalities. Core values: We believe that human life in its many forms is valuable. All people deserve to achieve their full potential, but are also responsible for sustaining the environment. Living in freedom and dignity with respect for others and the planet leads to individual well-being and fair, vibrant societies. • Freedom & dignity • Responsible citizenship • Self-determination & diversity • Equality & justice • Sustainable use of our planet’s resources Our three impact areas: • Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion • Climate Justice • Civic Rights in a Digital Age

What a difference a space makes! Where the #ShapingFeministForeignPolicy conference in Mexico saw a female majority (and some male allies), the first #prepmeeting of the Financing for Development #FFD4 could do with more female voices at the table and more #genderequality on the menu! With Chido Nyaruwata, one of the Walkie-Talkies of #WalkingtheTalk we are in #AddisAbaba this week. The first two days were all about setting the scene: expectations of countries, international organizations and (too) few civil society voices about the year long preparations leading up to the #FFD4 conference to be held in Sevilla in July 2025. The clearest messages: 1. Accelerate financial investments into #SDGs as only 17% are on track and we have an annual financial gap of 2.5 to 4 trillion USD. 2. Transforming the international financial architecture, especially when it comes to issues of debt (and the role of Multilateral Development Banks), voice and agency of Majority World countries. 3. While ODA remains a relevant tool (and Majority World countries reminded Global North of the 0.7% commitment), there is a shift to more blended finance (particularly to address the climate crisis), private sector investments, domestic resource mobilization and innovative financing. And how did #genderequality, #CSOparticipation and #youthpower fare? Not so well, only a few country delegations mentioned specific commitments and expectations around these issues and/or meaningful participation. And sometimes silence spoke louder, like in the case of my own country #theNetherlands, a leader on gender equality, not even mentioning it at all! And this is despite common knowledge, reiterated once again by the Deputy Minister for International Development of #Norway @Bjorg Sandkjaer that the best strategy for wealth creation is an investment in #womenandgirls! We have got our work cut out for us! Let's do this...

📢 Open #call: We're looking for a #webdeveloper to build a website that will serve as a platform for monitoring and displaying #data related to civil liberties worldwide. The EU System for an Enabling Environment for Civil Society (#EUSEE) is a six-year program that engages and supports civil society organizations across 86 countries where civic space is under pressure. The website that will be developed for EU SEE serves two purposes: 1️⃣ Via the backend of the website, researchers need to be able to submit regular updates on the state of civil society conditions in their respective countries. 2️⃣ This data and information will then be displayed on the frontend of the website and is intended to reach policymakers, civil society organizations and members of the media. At the beginning of a new week, we're looking back at a historic court ruling. On June 21, 2024, the Namibian High Court declared the country’s laws banning same-sex relations unconstitutional, marking a significant victory for human rights and LGBTIQ+ equality in the region. 🏳️🌈 Central to this landmark victory is Friedel Dausab, a prominent lawyer and passionate human rights advocate in Namibia. Friedel is a member of the #FreeToBeMe Community of Action in Namibia, a safe space where LGBTIQ+ people can jointly develop and implement plans to advocate for their rights, and he is a Safety and Security officer at Positive Vibes (Trust), one of the program's partners. "This is good for young LGBTQ people to know that their love is not a crime. It is a great day for Namibia." https://lnkd.in/dhFJYHBY

The new policy brief on gender data is now available! Without gender data, governments cannot fully understand the impact of their policies, measure progress accurately, or ensure accountability. Data2X, United Nations Foundation and #WalkingTheTalk have developed an advocacy brief to guide the collection of #GenderData for feminist foreign policies (#FFP). To ensure that data is used to reduce inequalities and inform better foreign policy programs, investments, and decision-making, the following principles should be adopted for gender data: 1️⃣ Inclusive Start from the standpoints and lived experiences of women, girls, and gender-diverse people. Adopt data collection processes that recognize and represent diverse gender identities, moving away from binary approaches to gender disaggregation and analysis. 2️⃣ Participatory Meaningfully engage women, girls, and gender-diverse people in decision-making and processes for collecting data about their own lives, experiences, and communities. 3️⃣ Action Oriented Prioritize the publication and use of data in ways that enable more effective, tailored policies and programming, ultimately benefiting the women, girls, and gender-diverse people most impacted by FFPs.
