Image of month

After a fantastic response to our Research is Beautiful campaign – we have our May winner!

Our Research is beautiful image campaign highlights images that showcase your research – from your science, to the people in your lab and everything that surrounds it.

Congratulations to Elisa Moutin from our Cambridge Institute for the winning image of the past month. Her picture captures a piece of mouse colon where stem cells and their progeny were marked with a genetic tool called Confetti with different colours. The Confetti colours (red, yellow, cyan and green) have been replaced with the CRUK brand colours by microscopy core head Andreas Bruckbauer of the Cambridge Institute.

Elisa Moutin from our Cambridge Institute: “In this image, epithelial cells work together in response to signals from their environment to repair the tissue that was injured by inflammation. This a perfect representation of the community at the CRUK CI, which comes together in support of anyone needing it.”

The image shows epithelial cells working together to repair tissue – and it’s the collective effort aspect which Elisa sees as a hugely important part of her work at the Cambridge Institute.

“The efforts I have been able to participate in since I have been here include COVID-testing for Addenbrooke’s hospital staff to allow them to keep working during the pandemic, collection of surgical and general equipment for the Ukrainian people, fundraiser to support girls education in Afghanistan and more recently for medical aid and food banks for the people of Palestine,” says Elisa.

“I am so proud of having worked and been a part of the community of the CI institute, in which the excellent quality of research equates to the quality of the people.”

Congratulations Elisa and thank you to everyone else who entered – it really was a fantastic crop of images and stories! Keep your eyes peeled over the coming month and we’ll showcase some of the entries on our social media and Cancer News for Researchers.

And don’t forget – the campaign continues! We want your images… so drop us an email today with your wonderful moments of science. T&Cs apply.
