🎮🦑 NSF Convergence Accelerator’s Track E: Networked Blue Economy-funded project Ocean Vision AI, led by MBARI, created a fun and relaxing virtual game called FathomVerse, where players explore the ocean and identify marine life using real pictures gathered by ocean researchers. By playing the game, users are helping train an artificial intelligence model to visually process ocean data, which in turn can be deployed by scientists to make the process of analyzing thousands of ocean images more efficient. FathomVerse seeks to transform ocean exploration by engaging a community of ocean enthusiasts to work alongside researchers. Visiting snow leopards in their natural habitat or hanging with penguins in Antarctica is a life-changing way to engage with nature but it's not within the grasp of most people. So how can we leverage technology to offer that exposure and foster empathy for wildlife conservation? My guest today, Gautam Shah, figured out a way to combine his passion with entrepreneurship to connect people with wildlife in fun, unique ways. Today we talk about why public engagement with wildlife is so important, and how using games can be more effective than current conservation tactics. Gautam shares some very cool examples of work they've done with partners such as Adidas and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We talk about empathy vs. caring, how "behavior change" is not the primary goal of this work, and why many current conservation messages can derail efforts to engage everyday people by not having empathy for them. In the summer of 2021, Kakani Katija came to me and asked whether Internet of Elephants could build a #game about #ocean exploration and discovery based on the research she was doing with MBARI. At the time, the answer to that was unclear. But now, through a thoughtful iterative process, a great partnership with game studio &ranj, and a lot of deep collaboration between ocean scientists, AI engineers, game developers, and hundreds of test users, I'm proud to say that FathomVerse has launched and is both beautiful and meaningful.
