The latest escalation between the IDF and Hamas echoes a wider geopolitical situation, with Iran-backed Hezbollah widening the scale of the conflict, and shifting focus away from Gaza. In recent weeks, fighting between Hezbollah and the IDF intensified, with deadly strikes causing civilians in northern Israel and southern Lebanon to leave their homes. Expanding the northern front further could trigger regional escalations, becoming a full-scale conflict. 💡 Read more from TNGO’s Beatrice Ala to learn about the geopolitical history of Hezbollah and the Israel Defense Forces: https://lnkd.in/gY93kG2y #politics #geopolitics #Israel #Hamas #IDF #security

Hong Kong’s status as a global financial center can be attested to many things, including its strong market infrastructure and tax systems, but a key factor is the “one country, two systems” model. During the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, Hong Kong’s stagnation remains the exception to global market rebounding. Implementing the Security Law in 2020, and the recent Article 23, raised concerns about Hong Kong’s financial standing. Hong Kong’s future “hinges not only on whether it becomes another mainland city but also foreign investors’ willingness to invest in China.” Read more from TNGO’s Joyce Lok Yiu Lo to learn more about Hong Kong’s standing as a major financial center and how recent security laws may impact that: https://lnkd.in/gf3N864K #China #HongKong #security #finance #geopolitics

For the first time in Catalonian parliament history, recent elections saw a non-independence majority. Then-president Pere Aragonès called for early elections in March of this year after failing to pass the Generalitat’s budget bill for next year. Election results showed the Socialist Party of Catalonia became the most-voted party, but still needs to create pacts to hold the presidency. The uncertainty over who will become president, combined with the historic pro-independence loss shows a “new horizon for the region.” Read more from TNGO’s María Vallés González to learn more about Catalonia’s political landscape 👉 https://lnkd.in/g5Jzra-H #politics #Europe #Catalonia #elections

“As the war in Kosovo was framed as an existential threat to European security, the war in Ukraine is similarly raising concerns about a direct confrontation with Russia…The security threat posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine is increasing the EU political will to let new member in, providing new momentum for enlargement.” 💡Read more from TNGO’s Silvia Oggiano to learn about the history of the EU and the politics of its enlargement: https://lnkd.in/g3ry2a7h #EU #Kosovo #Ukraine #security #politics

Farmers’ protests across Europe began in late 2023 over many issues including carbon taxes, low food prices, trading with non-EU countries, and a pesticide ban. These protests demonstrate a deep divide amongst European farmers at not only the left-right wing divides, but also urban vs. rural and supranational vs. national. What all of these protests have in common is a critique of the European Green Deal. Read more from TNGO’s Aralda Torres to learn about how the protests are showing a deep divide among farmers 👉 https://lnkd.in/gD92RBBG #EU #agriculture #GreenDeal #economy #politics

While much of Europe has shifted to shorter work weeks, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has introduced a six-day workweek as an option for employers to implement. Critics have argued that this change might lay the groundwork for worker exploitation and raises concerns regarding the enforcement of labor laws within the country. After years of recession, Greece’s economy has been on the mend with a 10.7% unemployment rate. However this statistic contrasts sharply with the ongoing struggles laborers endure including low wages and high inflation rates. This drastic change may lead Greek workers to find work elsewhere within the EU. Read more from TNGO’s Nicholas Zalewski to learn about how this is a short term solution to a long term problem: https://lnkd.in/e_qNimAJ #EU #Mitsotakis #Greece #laborlaws
